CISA’s 2023–2024 Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence is an agency strategy for using AI to support cybersecurity, protecting AI systems, and reducing risks to critical infrastructure. CISA’s official materials cited here include the roadmap and its November 14, 2023 announcement; they do not establish whether a separate FAQ page exists. The roadmap PDF is the primary source for its goals and five lines of effort.

What is CISA’s AI roadmap?

The 2023–2024 CISA Roadmap for Artificial Intelligence sets out how the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency planned to address AI at the intersection of its cybersecurity and critical-infrastructure responsibilities. It aligns CISA’s work with a broader whole-of-government AI strategy.

The roadmap is an agency strategy, not a consumer buying guide or a recommendation to choose particular AI products. Its scope includes CISA’s own use of AI and work with public- and private-sector partners.

What are the three broad aims?

CISA describes three aims: promote beneficial uses of AI to strengthen cybersecurity capabilities, protect AI systems from cyber-based threats, and deter malicious uses of AI that could threaten critical infrastructure. In the November 14, 2023 announcement, then-CISA Director Jen Easterly summarized the roadmap as an agency-wide plan focused on those goals.

What are the five lines of effort in CISA’s AI roadmap?

The roadmap organizes its work into five lines of effort:

  1. Responsibly use AI to support CISA’s mission. This covers using AI in ways that help the agency carry out its cybersecurity and infrastructure-security work.
  2. Assure AI systems. CISA’s announcement describes work to support secure-by-design adoption, provide guidance for secure and resilient AI development and implementation, and make recommendations for generative AI red-teaming.
  3. Protect critical infrastructure from malicious AI use. This addresses the risk that AI capabilities could be used to threaten the systems and services critical infrastructure depends on.
  4. Collaborate with partners. The roadmap calls for work with interagency, international, and public partners.
  5. Expand AI expertise in the workforce. CISA identifies workforce knowledge and skills as part of carrying out its AI-related mission.

What does the roadmap say about secure-by-design AI?

The roadmap calls on AI manufacturers to take ownership of security outcomes for customers, lead product development with transparency and accountability, and treat secure-by-design practices as a business priority. This framing places responsibility on manufacturers as well as on organizations that deploy AI systems.

Does CISA have FAQs about its AI roadmap?

The official materials cited here include the roadmap PDF and its announcement, but they do not establish whether CISA has a separate FAQ page dedicated to the roadmap. For the five workstreams and the agency’s stated approach, consult the official roadmap.

Is the 2023–2024 roadmap still CISA’s current AI plan?

The title identifies the document’s stated period, and CISA announced it on November 14, 2023. Those dates alone do not show whether every initiative ended in 2024 or whether this remains CISA’s current plan in 2026. The official materials cited above describe the roadmap, but do not establish the present status of each initiative.
