CISA warns that CVE-2026-84411, a flaw in MikroTik RouterOS web management, may let an unauthenticated network attacker execute code as root or cause a denial of service with one crafted request. The affected-version boundary is not clear: CISA’s advisory copy lists releases below 7.24, while a September 30 report attributes to MikroTik guidance to update to 7.23 or later. Administrators should restrict web-management access and confirm the fixed build in current official guidance before choosing an update.

What is CVE-2026-84411?

CVE-2026-84411 is an integer underflow in the HTTP request-body handling of MikroTik RouterOS’s web management service. CISA’s advisory says the vulnerable code is reachable before authentication, so an attacker who can reach the service over a network would not need valid credentials to send the crafted request. The stated outcomes are arbitrary code execution as root or denial of service.

CISA advisory ICSA-26-272-06 was released September 29, 2026, and revised September 30. The advisory copy collected from CISA’s CSAF feed describes the flaw and its potential impact. BleepingComputer’s September 30 report says CISA had no knowledge of exploitation of this specific vulnerability at that time. That is a report about the status on that date, not proof that the flaw has never been exploited.

Which RouterOS versions are affected?

The available version statements do not establish a clear fixed release. CISA’s advisory copy lists RouterOS versions below 7.24 as affected. In contrast, BleepingComputer reported that MikroTik recommended updating to 7.23 or later, while also noting that MikroTik had not published its own advisory and that the version detail needed clarification as of September 30, 2026.

Mikrotik hEX RB750Gr3 5-port Ethernet Gigabit Router
  • hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
  • The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
  • It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
  • IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
  • Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button

Because “7.23 or later” overlaps with the range CISA lists as affected, do not treat that guidance alone as confirmation that a particular 7.23 build is fixed. The report also identified RouterOS 7.24.4 as the latest stable release and 7.23.7 as the latest long-term release on September 30, with both available since September 16. Those release identifiers do not confirm that either release resolves CVE-2026-84411.

Before deploying a build for remediation, check MikroTik’s current security notices and CISA’s ICSA-26-272-06 advisory for an explicit affected range and fixed-version statement. If the vendor’s current guidance still does not identify a confirmed fix for the installed branch, contact MikroTik support rather than infer that a newer version number is sufficient.

What administrators should do

Inventory versions and restrict web management

  • Record the RouterOS version and release branch on each deployed device; compare each installation with the affected range in CISA’s advisory and any newer vendor clarification.
  • Limit access to the web-management service to trusted administrative networks. Remove public internet exposure and deny access from networks that do not need to administer the router.
  • Where exposure cannot be removed immediately, reduce the set of systems and users able to reach the management interface, and monitor for unusual access or service disruption.

Update only against confirmed vendor guidance

Once MikroTik identifies the fixed release for the affected branch, install the appropriate update using the organization’s change-control and backup procedures, then verify the installed version. Do not use the separate RouterOS 7.24.4 or 7.23.7 release references as proof of remediation without a vendor statement tying a build to this CVE.

Reduce network exposure

CISA’s recommendations, as reported by BleepingComputer, include keeping control systems inaccessible from the internet, placing control networks and remote devices behind firewalls, isolating them from business networks, using updated VPNs for remote access, and securing connected devices. Apply these controls to the actual network paths that can reach RouterOS management. A firewall or VPN can reduce exposure, but neither substitutes for installing a confirmed software fix.

What the warning does—and does not—establish

The advisory describes a serious pre-authentication weakness with potential root-level impact, but the sources cited here do not establish an affected-device count or a broader incident rate. CISA’s lack-of-known-exploitation statement in the September 30 report applies specifically to CVE-2026-84411 as of that report’s publication; it should not be confused with reports of exploitation of other MikroTik vulnerabilities.

MikroTik’s September 16 CVE-2026-52346 notice separately recommends keeping RouterOS up to date and using a strong firewall. That notice concerns a different vulnerability and does not establish which RouterOS builds fix CVE-2026-84411.
