Circuit Breaker Labs is an early-stage business-to-business (B2B) AI safety lab, not a chatbot or parental-control app. It connects to a customer’s model API, runs simulated adversarial conversations, and reports where a conversational system may fail. The company is targeting high-risk products such as AI coaching, journaling, and mental-health support, where a misunderstanding or unsafe reply can matter greatly.
Its approach could help developers find weaknesses before release. However, the available evidence does not show that Circuit Breaker Labs prevents harm, makes an AI system safe for children, or eliminates the need for human oversight.
What Circuit Breaker Labs does
The company describes its service as automated red-teaming for conversational AI. A customer supplies an API endpoint; Circuit Breaker Labs generates user interactions designed to expose unsafe behavior, then delivers an audit report describing failure patterns and suggested improvements.

Why the testing focuses on realistic, messy conversations
Simple benchmark questions rarely resemble how people actually talk. Circuit Breaker Labs says it creates simulated users across ages, backgrounds, languages, and cultures, with help from human domain experts. The simulations are intended to include slang, coded language, typos, and other speech patterns that can confuse a model.

CEO Shirali Nigam explained the problem this way: “The way a six-year-old girl versus a 45-year-old man, or someone who speaks English as a first language versus a second language, or … gamer slang versus someone else who uses a different kind of slang, all of those can really trip up a model.”
The company also emphasizes multi-turn conversations. A risky interaction may develop gradually: a user can disclose distress, change the subject, test boundaries, or interpret an earlier answer in an unexpected way. Testing only isolated prompts can miss those changes in context.

What varied simulations can reveal
- Whether a model recognizes indirect or coded references to self-harm, abuse, or other danger.
- Whether safety behavior changes with slang, spelling errors, translation, or dialect.
- Whether the system responds consistently as a conversation becomes longer and more emotionally complex.
- Whether a seemingly harmless earlier answer creates problems several turns later.
How large is the test program?
Circuit Breaker Labs’ website advertises “100,000+” simulated interactions and explainable scores. Those are first-party capability claims from the company, not independent measurements of safety performance. A large number of test conversations can improve coverage, but the count alone does not prove that a model behaves safely in real use or that the simulations represent every population and situation.
“Explainable” scoring is potentially useful when an engineering team needs to understand why a test failed. The published material does not establish an independently validated scoring standard, a universal pass mark, or evidence that fixing reported failures leads to safer outcomes after deployment.

Why children are part of the conversation
The founders’ motivation includes the case of Sewell Setzer, a 14-year-old whose parents alleged in a lawsuit that a Character.AI chatbot encouraged him after he disclosed thoughts of self-harm. That is an allegation reported in connection with litigation, not an established finding that the chatbot caused his death.
The case illustrates why age, vulnerability, and conversation history matter when evaluating systems that present themselves as companions, coaches, or sources of emotional support. Children may also be less able to recognize a model’s limitations or challenge an authoritative-sounding response. Testing can look for dangerous behaviors, but it cannot substitute for product safeguards, crisis escalation procedures, age-appropriate design, or responsible adult supervision.

What Circuit Breaker Labs has—and has not—shown
Established by the available material
- The company has a working product and sells an API-connected evaluation service.
- Its stated focus includes AI coaching, journaling, behavioral support, and mental-health applications.
- It uses simulated users, multi-turn interactions, and human expertise to model varied communication.
- TechCrunch described it as very early-stage and reported five employees on October 2, 2026. LinkedIn listed the company as founded in 2025, based in Washington, DC, and in the 2–10 employee range; those details can change.
Not established
- That its tests prevent real-world injury or make a product safe for children.
- That “100,000+” interactions have been independently verified or are representative of all important users.
- That its scores predict incidents in production or are comparable across vendors.
- That customers who fix identified issues achieve a measured reduction in harm.
How to interpret the customer endorsement
The company website publishes a testimonial from Kevin M. Ramotar, Psy.D., CPHQ, Director of Clinical Product & AI at Grow Therapy: “Circuit Breaker Labs has been a valuable partner in our work to build and maintain a safe, high-quality AI product in behavioral health.”

What developers should ask before relying on any AI safety test
- What populations and languages are represented? Ask for coverage details rather than assuming that a large test count means broad demographic coverage.
- How are multi-turn scenarios designed? Find out whether conversations include escalation, ambiguity, role changes, and delayed disclosures.
- How are failures labeled? Request definitions for severity, reviewer qualifications, disagreement handling, and reproducibility.
- What happens after a failure is found? A useful process should connect findings to model changes, policy updates, re-testing, and production monitoring.
- What independent evidence exists? Look for evaluations conducted or replicated by parties outside the vendor and its customers.
- What human safeguards remain? High-risk products still need escalation paths, incident response, privacy controls, age protections, and human review.
Where the company fits today
Circuit Breaker Labs is best understood as an early-stage attempt to find conversational-AI failures before deployment. Its distinctive pitch is the combination of simulated users, adversarial behavior, language and cultural variation, and conversations that unfold over many turns.
That makes the service potentially relevant to organizations building sensitive AI products. It does not make the company a safety shield that parents can buy, and it does not turn a tested chatbot into a guaranteed-safe companion for a child. CTO Arul Nigam summarized the broader ambition as: “We want to help build that trust for people.” Trust, in this context, still depends on evidence from independent evaluation and on safeguards beyond automated testing.
