The 1910 Gaumont Chronophone was an early system for synchronizing phonograph sound with projected film. Its two turntables helped keep sound going, and a differential mechanism could correct timing drift. Calling it the “first-ever mixer and crossfader” is not supported as a literal technical description: the documented function was film-and-disc synchronization, not modern audio mixing.
What was the Chronophone?
The Chronophone was Gaumont’s sound-on-disc system: a phonograph played alongside a cinematograph so that recorded sound accompanied moving images. It was not sound-on-film. The Musée des arts et métiers dates the initial model’s first presentation to 1902 and describes a 1910 apparatus that synchronized image and sound, with compressed-air amplification and two phonograph turntables for longer continuous listening. Musée des arts et métiers collection description
The central engineering challenge was making two separate machines—the phonograph and the cinematograph—stay in step while also making sound loud enough for an audience. La Cinémathèque française credits engineer Georges Laudet with important amplification work using flames and later compressed air between 1902 and 1905. La Cinémathèque française: “Alice Guy tourne une phonoscène”
Why 1910 matters—and why it is not the beginning
- 1900: Gaumont experiments included a synchronized film and cylinder-phonograph presentation to members of the Société française de photographie. La Cinémathèque française says the system was still too primitive to satisfy. La Cinémathèque française
- 1902: The Musée des arts et métiers dates the first showing of the initial Chronophone model to this year. Musée des arts et métiers
- 1902–1905: Laudet’s work advanced amplification, including the move to compressed air. La Cinémathèque française
- 1910: The museum’s surviving apparatus is dated to this year and was used at the Académie des Sciences for a talking film featuring physicist Arsène d’Arsonval. La Cinémathèque française also says Gaumont had solved the problem of direct-sound recording by 1910. Musée des arts et métiers; La Cinémathèque française
So 1910 is a significant date for a particular apparatus and a recording milestone, not the invention date of the entire system.

How the two turntables and synchronization worked
The twin-turntable arrangement addressed continuity: while one disc played, the second gave the operator a way to continue with another record rather than stopping the sound when a single side ended. That practical resemblance to later DJ equipment can be striking, but two turntables alone do not establish a mixer or crossfader.
A cataloged 1910 Chronophone differential mechanism addressed a different problem: timing drift between the film apparatus and phonograph. La Cinémathèque française’s catalog cites a 1904 Gaumont operating brochure describing how the cinematograph could be advanced or delayed relative to the Cyclophone after a stylus jump or another accident. La Cinémathèque française catalog record That is synchronization correction, not evidence that the operator blended between two audio signals.

Was it really the first mixer and crossfader?
Not on the evidence available here. “First-ever mixer and crossfader” is a modern, provocative framing that appears in popular coverage, including Make:’s 2012 headline. Make: article The museum documents two turntables and continuous listening; the catalog documents a mechanism for correcting film-disc timing. Neither source establishes audio mixing or crossfading in the modern technical sense.

What audiences heard—and what the system could not guarantee
Compressed-air amplification made larger-theatre presentation possible, but synchronization and intelligibility remained challenges for early sound-on-disc systems. A scholarly account in The Birth of the Talkies explains why songs often suited the Chronophone better than spoken dialogue: music could remain engaging when individual words were indistinct, and small synchronization errors were less disruptive when performers were singing. Indiana University Press, The Birth of the Talkies
This was an important step in combining recorded sound and projected images, but it should not be mistaken for a fully reliable modern talking-picture system. The picture and sound still depended on separate media and machinery that had to remain coordinated.

Chronophone venues: keep the dates distinct
The 1910 Academy demonstration is not the same event as Gaumont’s later Paris venue history. Gaumont’s corporate history dates the opening of a dedicated Chronophone venue in Paris to 1908, while its acquisition and conversion of the Gaumont-Palace is dated to 1911. The scholarly chapter says regular Phono-Scènes at the palace began in 1910. These describe different milestones—venue operations versus building acquisition and conversion—and should not be collapsed into one date.
