Chrome does have on-device AI capabilities, but it does not hide a general-purpose chatbot that every user can open and chat with. Its Prompt API uses Gemini Nano as a model that websites, web apps, or extensions can call. Trying it involves Chrome’s developer-oriented setup—not switching on a regular chat interface.
What Chrome’s built-in AI actually does
Chrome’s built-in AI documentation describes browser-managed models and APIs for developers to use in web experiences. The Prompt API lets an eligible site or app send prompts to Gemini Nano; the model is downloaded when needed. That is different from a standalone chatbot built into Chrome. Chrome’s built-in AI overview explains the distinction.
Google also offers Gemini in Chrome, a separate consumer-facing browsing assistant for asking questions about pages and summarizing content. Its availability and capabilities depend on rollout, device, and region. The reviewed announcements do not establish that Gemini in Chrome runs locally, so do not treat it as the same feature as Chrome’s Gemini Nano APIs. Google’s Gemini in Chrome announcement covers that product.

#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Operating system: Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or later, Linux, or supported ChromeOS on a Chromebook Plus. The guide does not list mobile Chrome or non-Chromebook Plus ChromeOS as supported for these APIs.
- Storage: At least 22 GB free on the volume containing your Chrome profile.
- Processing hardware: More than 4 GB of GPU VRAM, or a CPU with at least 16 GB of RAM and four or more cores.
- Audio input: Prompt API audio input requires a GPU.
- Network: An unmetered connection is required for the initial model download. The guide says subsequent local model use does not require a network connection.
The model’s exact download size varies. The guide says that, after download, Chrome may remove the model if free disk space falls below 10 GB; it can be downloaded again when requirements are met. Treat this as documented current behavior, not a permanent guarantee.
How to enable local testing in Chrome
The following is a developer/local-prototyping path, not a way to add a chat window to Chrome. Chrome’s API maturity and flag availability can change; use the official getting-started instructions if a flag or API state differs in your version.

- In Chrome’s address bar, open
chrome://flags/#optimization-guide-on-device-modeland enable the on-device model flag. - For Gemini Nano APIs, open
chrome://flags/#prompt-api-for-gemini-nanoand enable it. The guide also documents a multilingual option. - Relaunch Chrome when prompted.
- Open
chrome://on-device-internalsto inspect on-device model diagnostics. - In a developer’s test page or app, check the Prompt API’s availability with
LanguageModel.availability(). A result from this API is a diagnostic for the API environment; it does not create a consumer chat interface.
What local processing means—and does not mean
For the documented local model use, Chrome’s guide says that after the initial download, inference can run without a network connection and data is not sent to Google or third parties. This statement applies to that on-device API use; it should not be generalized to every Chrome AI feature, websites that call an API, or Gemini in Chrome.
Using Gemini Nano through the Prompt API requires a website, app, or extension that implements the API. Enabling flags alone does not provide a prompt box, conversation history, or a general-purpose assistant UI. Availability can also vary with hardware, Chrome version, and the API’s development stage.
