ChromeOS 124 began rolling out to most Chromebooks on Google’s Stable channel on May 14, 2024, but delivery was staged—not simultaneous across every model. Google published another stable build on May 20. ChromeOS 124 is no longer a current release in 2026, so check your Chromebook’s update schedule to see whether it still receives official updates.
When did ChromeOS 124 roll out?
Google announced the Stable-channel rollout on May 14, 2024, with ChromeOS version 124.0.6367.219 and platform version 15823.58.0. Google said it would reach most ChromeOS devices over the following days, rather than all devices at once. Google’s May 14 release notice records that build.
On May 20, Google announced a subsequent Stable-channel build, version 124.0.6367.225, with platform version 15823.60.0, also rolling out to most devices over the following days. The two notices show that the release advanced through staged updates; they do not establish that every Chromebook received either build on the announcement date. Google’s May 20 release notice lists the follow-up build.
Why might a Chromebook not have received version 124?
“Most devices” is not a promise of an immediate update for every Chromebook. Stable releases are rolled out over time, and availability depends on the device and its support status. A Chromebook on a different update channel may also follow a different release path.

Because version 124 dates to May 2024, it is not the version to expect on a currently supported Chromebook in 2026. Check for the latest update available to your device rather than treating 124 as a current target. If the device has reached its automatic-update end date, it will no longer receive automatic software updates.
What changed in ChromeOS 124?
Google’s ChromeOS Long-term Support release information lists changes across user-facing and managed-device areas. Some features were intended for administrators or managed sessions, so their inclusion in the release does not mean every consumer would see them.

- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Open Additional details.
- Find Update schedule and read the automatic-update end date.
Google’s Chromebook Help page explains that older devices eventually stop receiving updates when their hardware cannot support newer versions. It also says that “Models released before 2021 or later will get updates for 10 years”; the page’s current guidance describes devices released in 2021 or later as receiving 10 years of updates. What happens after the update end date?
A Chromebook can continue to run after its automatic-update end date, but Google says it will no longer receive automatic software and security updates. That means the device does not gain new ChromeOS fixes through the normal automatic update process. Google’s stated options are to switch to a newer Chromebook or keep using the existing computer without those updates.
When deciding whether to keep an out-of-support Chromebook or replace it, consider its remaining AUE support, security-update status, performance, app compatibility, any management requirements, and the total cost of replacement. The support page sets out the update lifecycle, but it does not rank current models or provide current prices.
