ChromeOS 119 became available again for most Chromebooks on November 29, 2023, after Google paused its rollout for about a week, according to Chrome Unboxed. The newly offered build was 119.0.6045.192, replacing the earlier 119.0.6045.158. This is a historical rollout update—not guidance that ChromeOS 119 is current today.

What “ChromeOS 119 is back” meant

Chrome Unboxed reported that ChromeOS 119 had started rolling out and was then pulled for roughly a week. On November 29, 2023, the outlet observed that most Chromebooks could receive it again. Robby Payne described “the vast majority of Chromebooks once again gaining access to ChromeOS 119.” The report identified the restored version as 119.0.6045.192; the earlier build was 119.0.6045.158. Read the November 29, 2023 report from Chrome Unboxed.

The report said Google had not commented on why the update was pulled. The cause therefore remains unconfirmed. Payne noted that many devices still on ChromeOS 118 used Intel small-core processors and also called attention to the Snapdragon-powered Duets and AMD Ryzen-based ASUS Chromebook Flip CM5. Those were observations about the devices on the list, not evidence that their processors caused the delay.

A device missing from this historical list was not necessarily updated at that moment, and a listed device may have received the update later. Availability can differ by exact model, date, and whether an organization manages the Chromebook.

How to check for a Chromebook update now

Chromebooks check for and download updates automatically when connected to the internet. To check manually, use Google’s current instructions:

  1. Connect the Chromebook to the internet.
  2. Open Settings > About ChromeOS.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. If an update is available, let it download and restart the Chromebook if prompted to finish installing it.

See Google’s instructions for updating a Chromebook. If the device belongs to a school or employer, an administrator may control updates.

How to check whether your Chromebook is still supported

Update availability and update support are device-specific. To see the schedule for a particular Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details. Google notes that managed devices may indicate that updates are controlled by an administrator. Use Google’s Chromebook update-schedule guide for the current support information; the 2023 ChromeOS 119 report cannot establish a device’s 2026 status.

Why a Chromebook may not show an update

The old rollout list cannot diagnose a current update issue. Check the exact model and its update schedule, confirm that it is online, and consider whether an administrator manages it. These factors help distinguish a staged or unavailable update from a device setting controlled by an organization.

USB recovery is different from installing an ordinary update. Google describes it as a troubleshooting option for a damaged ChromeOS installation, not a routine way to obtain a release. Its recovery procedure requires a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB and permanently erases local storage, so back up important files first and try less invasive troubleshooting before recovery. See Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.
