On a Chromebook, press Search or Launcher + Shift + Space to open the compact Emoji picker. One date clarification: Google announced this shortcut and picker on August 2, 2021—not as a new ChromeOS 114 feature. ChromeOS 114 arrived in June 2023, with other highlights.
How to open and use the Chromebook Emoji picker
Press Search or Launcher + Shift + Space. Google documented this shortcut in its August 2, 2021 announcement.
- Place the cursor in the conversation, document, or other text field where you want the emoji.
- Press Search or Launcher + Shift + Space to open the compact picker.
- Search for an emoji or browse by scrolling.
- Click the emoji to insert it, then continue typing.
The announcement said emoji search was “currently only available in English.” That describes the feature as Google presented it in August 2021; it does not establish the picker’s language support today.

What ChromeOS 114 actually added
The picker predates M114 by nearly two years. ChromeOS.dev’s ChromeOS 114 release notes highlighted other features, including:

Those M114 highlights are separate from the Emoji picker. In June 2023, Google’s stable-channel notice listed ChromeOS and ChromeOS Flex version 114.0.5735.143, platform version 15437.57.0, rolling out to most devices over the following days with bug fixes and security updates. That is a dated release record, not a recommendation to use that build now.
The picker received later updates
Google’s September 27, 2023 ChromeOS M117 introduction described later GIF support in the picker. That subsequent addition is another reason not to treat the original 2021 description as a complete account of every behavior available today.
