Yes. You can use a Chromebook without signing in to a Google Account by selecting Browse as Guest on its sign-in screen, provided guest browsing is enabled on that device. Guest mode is temporary: it does not create a personal Chromebook account, and its local session data is deleted when you exit.

How to use a Chromebook as a guest

  1. If you are signed in, sign out to return to the Chromebook sign-in screen.

  2. Select Browse as Guest. Google’s guest-mode instructions and Chromebook setup guidance describe this option.

  3. When finished, open the system menu and select Exit guest. Exiting deletes files, cookies, website data, and browsing activity from that guest session, according to Google’s Chromebook Help.

What guest mode lets you do—and what it leaves out

Guest mode is intended for temporary use, such as borrowing or lending a Chromebook or using a shared device. It lets you browse without adding your Google Account as a Chromebook user. It is not the same as signing in: Google says signed-in users can get their bookmarks, extensions, and apps, while guest mode does not provide saved preferences or app installation.

  • No Play Store or app installation: Google’s guest-mode guidance says apps cannot be installed in guest mode.
  • Some features require sign-in: First-party applications and certain features, including built-in AI, are unavailable in guest mode, according to the same guidance.
  • Session data does not persist: Files, cookies, website data, and browsing activity from the guest session are deleted when you exit.

What guest mode does—and does not—keep private

Guest mode prevents Chrome from saving browsing activity in the local guest session, but it does not make your browsing anonymous. Websites you visit, sites where you sign in, your school or employer, your network operator, your internet service provider, and search engines may still receive or see information. Search suggestions may also use location or activity from the current guest session. See Google’s Chromebook guest guidance and Chrome’s explanation of guest browsing.

In other words, guest mode is useful for avoiding a lasting local session on the Chromebook; it does not hide activity from the network or the services you use.

Why “Browse as Guest” may be missing

Guest browsing can be disabled. On a personal Chromebook, the owner can review the guest-browsing control in Settings > Privacy and security > Manage other people. Google’s guidance on controlling who can use a Chromebook covers this setting.

On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may control whether guest mode is allowed. Users cannot change that policy themselves; contact the school or workplace administrator. Google’s administrator guidance explains that guest mode can be allowed or blocked on managed ChromeOS devices: Prepare Chromebooks for distance learning at home.

Google also lists guest browsing as a possible option when someone cannot sign in or lacks permission to sign in. That does not override an administrator’s decision to disable guest access. See Google’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.

Chromebook guest mode is not Chrome’s desktop Guest profile

Google distinguishes Chromebook guest browsing from the Guest profile in the desktop version of Chrome. Chrome’s help page says its desktop Guest mode is not available on Chromebooks and directs Chromebook users to the Chromebook guest instructions: Browse Chrome as a guest.
