There is no single best weather extension for Chrome on the evidence available. The five listings differ mainly in where the weather appears, either in the toolbar or on the new tab page, and in whether they change your search settings. Only one of the five keeps its forecast in the toolbar. Two explicitly switch search to Yahoo results.
This article compares what each Chrome Web Store listing and publisher page says, as checked on October 7, 2026. None of the extensions was installed or run. That means this comparison cannot tell you which forecast is more accurate, which alerts arrive faster, or which extension uses more memory or battery. Listings change, so confirm the details on the store page before you install anything.
What this comparison covers
Each extension is judged on six points that a listing can show directly: where the weather appears (toolbar or new tab); how far ahead the forecast reaches and whether hourly detail is stated; which extras are listed, such as radar, alerts, air quality, UV index, or sunrise and sunset; whether the extension changes or lets you control the search provider; what location access and data types are disclosed; and how recently the listing was updated and how much public feedback is visible.
The five extensions
Weather (weatherextension.com): toolbar-first
Weather is the only option here whose main display sits in the Chrome toolbar. The listing says the toolbar shows the current temperature, and opening it reveals current conditions, hourly and daily forecasts, and radar. You can let it find your location with permission, or search by city or postal code. Fahrenheit and Celsius are available, along with other measurement units and a choice of 12- or 24-hour time.

The listing also describes an optional lifetime upgrade called Weather Pro. According to the listing, it adds a Daily Brief, more saved locations and weather sources, custom toolbar colors, feels-like temperature, rain, snow and severe-weather alerts, and optional morning and evening summaries. The listing does not state which of these features are included without the upgrade beyond the core display described above.
WeatherTab: configurable new-tab dashboard
The publisher page for WeatherTab, hosted on weatherextension.com, says the extension replaces Chrome’s new-tab page. You can show a simple forecast, or add hourly conditions and an interactive radar. Location, units, clock, dashboard layout and background are all configurable, and the page mentions 36 weather photographs as background options. Search can stay on the browser’s default provider or use a provider you select.
Do not confuse this publisher page with the standalone Chrome listing titled “Weather Tab.” That is a different extension, covered in its own section below.
New Tab Weather (Visicom Media): five-day forecast with Yahoo search
New Tab Weather shows its forecast each time a new browser tab opens. The listing describes a five-day forecast and says the extension’s web search is powered by Yahoo. It requests location permission for local forecasts. It is the only one of the five that does not list hourly forecasts.
Rank #2

Weather Tab (TightropeInteractive): new-tab panel with Yahoo search replacement
Weather Tab changes both the new-tab page and the search engine, and its listing says search results come from Yahoo. Its stated features are local weather, humidity, sunrise and sunset, an hourly forecast, and a seven-day forecast. Its listing does not mention radar or air quality.
Weather Dashboard (drivesextensions): new-tab panel with environmental extras
Weather Dashboard names the widest set of extras among the five. Its listing describes current conditions, hourly and seven-day forecasts, and a 24-hour temperature graph that includes precipitation probability. It also lists air quality, UV index, sunrise and sunset, moon phases, and severe-weather alerts. The listing states that those alerts are US-only and come from the National Weather Service (NWS). You can select a location, choose Fahrenheit or Celsius, and set time formats and wind units.
Feature comparison
The table below uses only what each listing states. “Not stated” means the listing reviewed does not mention that feature. It does not mean the feature is absent from the extension.

Search behavior: what changes when you install
Two listings state a search change outright. New Tab Weather says its web search is powered by Yahoo. Weather Tab says it changes the new-tab page and the search engine to Yahoo results. WeatherTab’s publisher page works differently, because you choose whether search uses the browser default or a provider you select. The Weather and Weather Dashboard listings do not describe a search change.

- Enhanced Wi-Fi connectability option that enables your station to transmit its data wirelessly to the world's largest personal weather station network

| Extension | Search change described | User control stated |
|---|---|---|
| Weather | Not stated | Not stated |
| WeatherTab | Browser default, or a selected provider | Yes, the user chooses |
| New Tab Weather | Web search powered by Yahoo | Not stated |
| Weather Tab | Search engine replaced with Yahoo results | Not stated |
| Weather Dashboard | Not stated | Not stated |
To check what changed on your own browser, open Chrome’s Settings, select Search engine, and read the value next to “Search engine used in the address bar.” That confirms the address-bar default only. A new-tab search box added by an extension can behave differently, so open a new tab and look at it as well.
Permissions and data disclosures
Google’s Chrome Web Store Help documentation on extension permissions explains that the install or update warning shows access an extension may receive. The warning does not by itself mean the extension is dangerous. In that documentation’s words: “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” Google lists access to physical location as a permission category and says optional permissions may be requested after installation.
Store disclosures are statements from each developer. They are not independent audits, and Google’s general permissions page does not review any individual extension. The table shows what each listing reviewed says.

Ratings, user counts and update dates
These figures were observed on October 7, 2026. They show how many people had installed each extension, how many had rated it, and when the developer last published an update. They do not measure forecast quality.

| Extension | Version | Last updated | Users | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weather | 6.0.46 | September 21, 2026 | 100,000 | 3.1 out of 5 from 5.7K ratings |
| WeatherTab | Not stated on the publisher page | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| New Tab Weather | 1.08 | March 28, 2025 | 9,000 | No ratings shown |
| Weather Tab | 1.23.905 | September 9, 2023 | 2,000 | 3.3 out of 5 from 10 ratings |
| Weather Dashboard | 1.0.20 | January 24, 2026 | 18 | No ratings shown |
Weather Tab’s last update is more than three years old, and its 10 ratings are few. Weather Dashboard’s 18 users and lack of ratings mean very little public feedback is visible for it. Weather has the largest visible audience and rating count here, but those numbers do not show whether its forecasts are accurate.
The earlier AccuWeather extension
On June 17, 2020, AccuWeather announced that Mocha Global had developed a Chrome extension using AccuWeather forecast information. The announcement described location-based local forecasts, multiple locations, RealFeel, a four-day outlook, and activity insights. That is historical information only. It does not show that the extension is still available or maintained, so it is not counted among the five compared here.
A similarly named listing: “The Weather Tab”
A separate Chrome listing called “The Weather Tab” is not the same as the WeatherTab publisher page described above. Its listing describes local weather information and changing backgrounds, uses Bing-powered web search, and says it changes the new-tab page and the search engine. It falls outside the five-extension set, so none of the tables above include it. Its name is close enough to WeatherTab that it is worth checking which listing you are installing.

Which to choose
- You want the temperature visible without opening a page: Weather is the only toolbar-first option here.
- You want a forecast on every new tab and do not mind Yahoo search: New Tab Weather gives a five-day forecast. Weather Tab adds hourly and seven-day views, but its listing is the oldest here.
- You want a configurable dashboard and control over the search provider: WeatherTab offers the most layout options and a stated search choice, but its publisher page gives no version, user count or rating data.
- You want the most extras, such as air quality, UV, moon phases and alerts: Weather Dashboard lists the widest set, with US-only severe-weather alerts. Its small user count means you have little public feedback to weigh.
None of these choices reflects a tested ranking of forecast quality, speed or resource use.
Quick Recap
Checklist before you install
- Open the extension’s Chrome Web Store listing and compare the version, last-updated date, and privacy section with the figures above.
- Read the permission prompt that appears after you select Add to Chrome. Location access is the permission most of these listings describe.
- Open the developer’s privacy policy and read the data it says is collected, not just the summary on the listing.
- After installing, open Settings, then Search engine, and check the address-bar default. Then open a new tab to see whether its search box or layout has changed.
- Review your installed extensions at chrome://extensions and remove any you no longer want.
