Chrome’s built-in split view, vertical tabs, tab groups, reading mode, PDF tools, and Memory Saver each address a different browsing nuisance. Use them to keep related pages together, view two tabs side by side, focus on an article, mark up a PDF, or reduce memory use from inactive tabs. They offer practical ways to organize work; Google’s feature descriptions do not establish a measured productivity gain.
Organize a crowded tab bar
Use vertical tabs to see page titles
When tab favicons and shortened labels make it hard to find the right page, vertical tabs put tabs in a side panel where more of each page title is visible. Google described vertical tabs as beginning to roll out in April 2026, so availability and interface details may vary. If you do not see the option, check that Chrome is up to date and look for the current tab or appearance controls in your version of Chrome. Google’s vertical-tabs and reading-mode announcement describes the rollout.
Group tabs around a task
Tab groups let you cluster related pages—for example, by project, class, topic, or task. If it helps your workflow, name groups by urgency or progress, such as “To read” and “In progress.” Keep the system simple enough that you can tell where a page belongs. To create a group, use Chrome’s tab context menu and choose the option to add a tab to a new group; exact labels may differ by version. Google’s tab-groups guidance covers organizing related pages.

Keep two pages visible with split view
Split view shows two tabs at once in a shared browser view. It suits paired tasks: a reference beside a draft, a video beside notes, or documentation beside code. Google’s September 2026 study guide says paired tabs stay linked, so you can return to that workspace. To start, use the tab’s context menu and choose the split-view option, then select or open the second tab in the paired view; the precise controls can vary across Chrome versions. Google’s feature announcement describes split view and its intended uses. Alex Tsu, a Chrome product manager, described it as a way to create “a single, organized space”; that is Google’s product description, not an independent measurement of time saved.

Read a page without its visual clutter
For a long article or study page, right-click the page and select “Open in reading mode” to switch to a text-focused view. Google says the mode allows adjustments to font, letter spacing, and contrast. The feature began rolling out in April 2026, and availability may vary; if the menu option is missing, check your Chrome version and current feature availability. See Google’s guidance on vertical tabs and immersive reading mode.
Mark up and file PDFs in Chrome
Open a PDF in Chrome’s built-in viewer to highlight passages and add notes without switching to a separate app. Google also announced a way to save PDFs directly to Drive, with saved files placed in a “Saved from Chrome” folder. The announcement does not specify account or storage conditions, so check the prompts and destination shown in your own Chrome and Drive accounts. The PDF tools and save workflow are described in Google’s Chrome feature announcement.

Adjust memory and battery behavior
Memory Saver
Memory Saver frees memory by deactivating tabs you are not using; Chrome reloads a tab when you return to it. If a site needs to keep running in the background, use Chrome’s performance settings to add it to the exceptions list. Google’s October 2024 post names Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum modes, but labels have changed across Google’s posts and may change again. Check the current wording in Chrome’s performance settings rather than relying on an older menu path. See Google’s 2024 performance-controls announcement.

Choose one feature for one recurring friction point
- Use tab groups when related pages are hard to find among open tabs.
- Try split view when you repeatedly compare or consult two pages.
- Open reading mode when page clutter makes a long article difficult to follow.
- Use Memory Saver when many inactive tabs are consuming memory, and exempt sites that need background activity.
- Use the PDF viewer’s annotations and Drive save workflow when you need to mark up and file a document.
Start with the problem you encounter most often, then add another feature only if it solves a separate annoyance.
