Christa Pike’s attorneys said on October 2, 2026, that she remained critically ill, unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator at a Nashville-area hospital, two days after Tennessee’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection. The hospital has not been identified in the cited reports, and her condition has not been independently confirmed by hospital records or a clinical statement.

What Pike’s lawyers said about her condition

Her attorneys described Pike as critically ill, unconscious, intubated and receiving breathing assistance from a ventilator. They also said she was being treated for serious effects of pentobarbital administered during the execution attempt, including significant injuries to both arms. These are statements attributed to her lawyers, not an independently documented medical assessment. CBS News reported the condition update on October 2; ABC News reported the lawyers’ account of her injuries and treatment.

What happened before the update

Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection on September 30, 2026, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. The attempt did not result in her death. The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) said she was taken to an off-site medical facility. Its advisory stated: “Christa Pike has been transported to an off-site medical facility.” TDOC’s September 30 advisory also said the department followed every step of the state’s lawful, established execution protocol.

Separately, the Associated Press reported that defense lawyer Randy Spivey said the execution team worked for about an hour to administer the drugs and that he counted at least seven needles in Pike’s left arm. That detail is Spivey’s account as reported by AP, not a finding established by the department’s advisory. The AP report also covered the lawyers’ condition update.

How the accounts differ

Account What it says Status of the information
Pike’s attorneys, reported October 2 She was critically ill, unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator; they described serious effects and injuries to both arms. Lawyers’ account; no independent clinical confirmation is included in the cited reports.
TDOC, September 30 The department said it followed its established protocol and confirmed Pike was transported to an off-site medical facility. Official agency position; it does not independently resolve the lawyers’ allegations.

What the lawyers asked the court to do

On October 2, Pike’s lawyers filed an emergency request in Davidson County Chancery Court seeking an order requiring TDOC to preserve evidence related to the execution attempt. They said preserving the material was necessary to help establish what happened and protect Pike’s legal rights. CBS News and ABC News reported the filing. The sources cited here do not establish whether the court granted the request or what evidence was ultimately preserved.
