For a video you need to share widely, choose H.264. Choose HEVC when a smaller file matters and the recipient’s device or software can play it. For a file intended for further editing, consider ProRes if the editing application supports it. Before exporting, check the destination, whether the video must remain editable, and whether it needs transparency.
Codec and container mean different things
A codec encodes the video stream; a container packages that stream and may also hold audio and other tracks. H.264, HEVC, and ProRes are codecs. MOV and MP4 are containers, so “MP4 or H.264” is not an either-or choice: a video can use a codec inside a container.
Final Cut Pro lists H.264, HEVC, and ProRes among supported video formats, and MOV and MP4 among supported containers. Apple’s Final Cut Pro media-format list describes formats for that application; it is not a universal compatibility guarantee for every player or editor.
Which codec should you choose?
H.264 for broad sharing
Pick H.264 when the priority is that more recipients can open the video. In QuickTime Player’s 4K and 1080p export options, Apple labels H.264 “Greater Compatibility.” Apple’s Keynote export guidance also describes H.264 as broadly compatible. QuickTime Player export options

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
HEVC when file size matters
HEVC, also called H.265, is a sensible choice when you want a smaller file and have checked that the destination supports playback. QuickTime Player labels HEVC “Smaller File Size” for its 4K and 1080p export options. Apple’s Keynote guidance says HEVC compresses better than H.264 while preserving the same visual quality, but does not give a universal size-saving percentage. The actual result depends on the video and export settings.
ProRes for an editing handoff
Consider ProRes when someone will continue editing the video in compatible software. Apple names ProRes 422 as an option for a movie that will be edited in software such as Final Cut Pro, and lists ProRes LT and Proxy variants as well. ProRes is not the default choice for a compact viewing copy. Apple’s Keynote guidance on movie formats

Choose MOV or MP4 based on the workflow
Pick a container that the receiving workflow accepts; the container does not by itself determine the codec. Final Cut Pro supports both MOV and MP4, but that does not mean every application handles every combination equally.

QuickTime Player exports QuickTime movies in .mov using H.264 or HEVC; it does not export MP4 video. If you specifically need an MP4, use a different documented export workflow or application rather than expecting QuickTime Player’s export controls to provide that container. Check compatibility before sharing HEVC
Compatibility depends on the receiving device and software, so do not assume that every Mac, third-party player, or editing application supports the same formats. Apple says media shared through methods such as AirDrop, Messages, or email may automatically be shared in a more compatible format when the receiving device does not support newer media formats. This behavior depends on the sharing method and device support; it is not a guarantee that every transfer will convert.
If you need to convert an HEVC video yourself, Apple documents two options: open it in QuickTime Player and choose “Greater Compatibility” to export H.264, or use Finder’s “Encode Selected Video Files” service and select an H.264 setting. Apple’s guidance on HEVC media

Preserve transparency only with a suitable source and workflow
If the video has an alpha channel, such as a ProRes 4444 source, QuickTime Player exposes a preserve-transparency option. Apple documents exporting that transparency with HEVC through this QuickTime workflow. This is a specific capability, not a guarantee that every codec, application, or recipient will preserve alpha. Check the receiving workflow before you export. QuickTime Player export options

Quick decision guide
- Sharing with recipients whose playback setup is unknown: H.264.
- Reducing file size, with destination support confirmed: HEVC.
- Handing off footage for further editing: ProRes, if the editor supports it.
- Needing transparency: confirm that the source has an alpha channel and that the target workflow supports the documented export.
- Needing a specific container: verify the receiving workflow and export tool; QuickTime Player’s own export is .mov, not MP4.
