There is no evidence-based single “best” email API for every developer. Choose by the kind of mail your application handles—transactional, marketing or broadcast, inbound processing, or a combination—then compare the real monthly cost and the operational work each service leaves to your team. Current official pricing confirms useful figures for Resend, Postmark and Amazon SES; available evidence does not support a complete seven-provider price or feature ranking.

Start with the email workflow you need

An email API connects an application to an email service so code can send messages or, where supported, receive and process them. Similar-looking APIs can serve different jobs, so identify the workflow before comparing plans.

  • Transactional email: messages triggered by an application event, such as a receipt, password reset or account alert.
  • Marketing or broadcast email: campaigns sent to a group of recipients. Check whether the provider supports this workflow and whether it keeps those messages separate from transactional traffic.
  • Inbound email processing: receiving messages and routing their contents or events to your application. Confirm this explicitly in current documentation; outbound sending alone does not establish inbound support.
  • Mixed use: if you need more than one workflow, check stream separation, account structure and combined cost rather than assuming a single plan covers everything.

For example, an application that sends only password resets has a different selection problem from a product that also sends newsletters or accepts email replies. Start by listing the message types, expected monthly volume and any receiving needs.

What verified pricing says in October 2026

The table uses published official pricing pages accessed in October 2026. Prices and plan details can change. The SES figure is a base outbound rate, not an all-in bill.

Provider Published pricing Relevant limits or cost caveats
Resend Free: $0/month for 3,000 emails/month. Pro: $20/month for 50,000 emails/month. Free plan has a 100-email-per-day cap, three domains and 30-day data retention. Pro lists $0.90 per additional 1,000 emails.
Postmark Free developer plan: 100 emails/month. Basic: $15/month. Basic lists 45-day data retention, five custom sending domains and unlimited emails per day.
Amazon SES À la carte outbound email: $0.10 per 1,000 emails. Additional charges may apply for attachment data, validation, dedicated IPs and deliverability-management features. AWS also shows plan-based options that can change the total.

To compare plans fairly, estimate the monthly message count and include overages, data charges, optional features and any fixed fees. A per-thousand rate is not necessarily the complete cost of operating the service.

How the providers fit different needs

Resend: a free allowance with a daily ceiling

Resend’s published free plan is a potential starting point for low-volume sending, but its 100-email daily cap matters as much as its 3,000-email monthly allowance. Its Pro plan lists 50,000 emails for $20 per month, with an additional-volume rate stated on the pricing page. Confirm current terms there before forecasting spend.

Postmark: separate transactional and broadcast streams

Postmark describes separate message streams for transactional and broadcast email and advises against mixing the two. That is a product-design distinction, not independent proof of superior inbox placement. Its listed free developer allowance is small; Basic starts at $15 per month and includes unlimited emails per day, according to its pricing page.

Amazon SES: a low listed outbound rate with add-on costs

SES lists outbound email at $0.10 per 1,000 messages under à la carte pricing. The rate is useful for a base-cost estimate, but the bill may also include data and optional services. Review the pricing page against your expected use rather than treating the headline rate as the total.

Twilio SendGrid: an Email API in a broader communications suite

Twilio presents SendGrid as its Email API within the broader Twilio communications product family. The official overview reviewed for this comparison did not provide enough current plan and quota detail to make a reliable price comparison. Check the current plan terms before deciding on cost.

Mailgun: compare its current terms directly

Mailgun publishes provider-comparison material, but vendor-authored comparisons are positioning claims rather than independent evaluations. The available official material did not establish readable current plan details here, so verify pricing and the features your application needs on current official pages.

Brevo and MailerSend: candidates to verify, not fully compared options

Brevo appeared in the 2026 comparison field, but its pricing page did not provide readable details in the material available for this article. MailerSend appeared in a secondary comparison result; no current official product or pricing page was examined. Treat both as candidates for your own shortlist, not as options with verified prices or feature profiles in this comparison.

How to choose based on volume and operating effort

  1. Forecast normal and peak monthly volume. Use expected sends, not just registered users. Include traffic spikes and retries where relevant.
  2. Apply the actual plan limits. Check monthly allowances, daily caps and overage rates. A monthly quota can still be restrictive if a daily ceiling blocks a launch or event-driven burst.
  3. Estimate the full bill. Add fixed plan fees and any relevant data, validation, dedicated-IP or deliverability-management charges. SES explicitly lists additional charge categories; other providers’ current terms should be checked directly.
  4. Price the engineering and operations work. Verify the SDKs and framework integrations your stack needs, event webhooks and logs for debugging, and the controls available for domain authentication and sending reputation. The pricing figures alone do not establish these capabilities.
  5. Confirm every workflow. Test the product fit against your requirements for transactional sends, campaigns, inbound processing or separate streams. Do not infer receiving support from the existence of an outbound Email API.
  6. Recheck before committing. Plan names, limits, overages, feature availability and regional terms can change. Use the provider’s current official pricing and documentation for the deployment you intend to run.

What the available evidence does—and does not—establish

The confirmed pricing pages allow a dated comparison of three providers’ listed prices and limits. They do not establish a complete seven-provider feature matrix or identify a universal winner. In particular, there is no independently measured, comparable deliverability benchmark here: inbox-placement and speed claims should not be treated as head-to-head results without a named publisher, test date, sample, methodology and caveats.

For a defensible shortlist, choose services that match your workflow, calculate total cost at your likely volume and inspect current documentation for integration, event visibility and operational controls. Then evaluate deliverability claims only when their testing method is transparent.
