The best outdoor TV antenna depends on which local stations you want, the broadcast bands they use, and where you can safely mount and aim an antenna. These five models are well-supported options from separate published guides—not a single head-to-head ranking. First check local station frequencies and directions, then match band coverage, antenna pattern, mounting location, and amplification to your home.
How to choose an outdoor antenna for your location
Antenna range claims and channel counts are not guarantees. Reception varies with transmitter power and location, terrain, buildings, trees, antenna height and orientation, and other obstructions. One For All likewise cautions that reception and the number of channels depend on several environmental factors (manufacturer reception guidance).
Check the stations and broadcast bands first
Use an address-based local station lookup to identify the stations you want and whether each broadcasts on UHF, high-VHF, or low-VHF. The physical channel a viewer sees on screen may differ from the station’s RF channel, so check the broadcast information rather than relying only on the channel number in a TV guide. PCWorld’s antenna selections prioritize strong reception on UHF RF channels 14–51 and high-VHF channels 7–13; its testing description says scans are repeated and antenna direction adjusted on some rescans (PCWorld’s guide and methodology).
Band coverage is a basic compatibility check: an antenna that does not support a station’s band may miss it even if its advertised range sounds ample. PCWorld’s Televes pick, for example, is not designed for low-VHF; its DB8e is not designed for VHF stations. Confirm the bands needed at your address before selecting either.

Match directionality to tower locations
A directional antenna can focus on a group of transmitters, but it needs to be aimed. If desired stations lie in different directions, a multidirectional design may be more practical, though coverage and range can involve trade-offs. Check the directions of your target towers and consider whether you can adjust the antenna after installation. HP’s selection guidance also emphasizes matching the antenna to local broadcast conditions (HP’s outdoor antenna guide).
Choose a mounting position and amplification for the whole system
Outdoor placement can reduce obstructions compared with an indoor position, but elevation alone does not guarantee reception. Nearby structures, trees, terrain, and the available line of sight still matter. Consider whether the antenna can be mounted securely and safely, and account for its size, included bracket and hardware, coax run, and access for future adjustments.

Amplification can help address signal loss through long cable runs or distribution to multiple televisions, but it cannot make an antenna cover a band it does not support or fix poor placement. Compare the antenna’s built-in or bundled amplifier with the length of the cable run and the rest of your setup. PCWorld notes that station counts on an RF channel can change, another reason not to treat a channel tally as a permanent guarantee.

Televes Dat Boss Mix LR: roof setup with filtering and distribution
PCWorld highlights this model for sensitive reception, a built-in 5G filter and amplifier, and an indoor distribution amplifier. Those functions may suit a roof installation that needs signal distribution, provided the local station mix does not require low-VHF reception.
Antennas Direct DB8e: weak-signal candidate for a sturdy mount
PCWorld cites good weak-signal reception and the ability to point the antenna panels in two directions. Its size and lack of VHF support are important constraints: it needs a strong mounting arrangement and is unsuitable when desired stations require VHF coverage.
Rank #4
- Long-Range Reception: TV antenna uses four patented loops, Hi-VHF elements and reflectors to receive free TV signals over-the-air from broadcast towers
- Durable Construction: Powerful TV antenna measures 17.4" H x 27.8" W x 6" D with premium durable materials for installation indoors, in an attic, or outdoors in suburban and rural areas
- Compatibility: NEXTGEN TV, 4K, 8K UHD, Full HD 1080p, no Internet required to watch over-the-air TV
- Reception Considerations: Each market has TV towers located in different areas; Distance to the towers and obstructions like trees and your home's building materials will affect reception; an antenna cannot provide cable TV channels
- Enhanced Signal Protection: Reflectors add forward gain and focus antenna's power to protect incoming TV signal from interference that causes pixelation or complete loss of picture; 20-inch mast's pivoting base allows installation on vertical or horizontal surfaces
Winegard Elite 7550: attic or outdoor option for UHF and high-VHF
PCWorld names the Elite 7550 its attic/outdoor pick and reports good reception of strong-to-medium signals on UHF and high-VHF, plus an inline amplifier. The guide flags its plastic mounting bracket as a build concern, so consider the mounting arrangement before placing it outdoors.

Antennas Direct Goliath: narrow-pattern option with a test-specific result
Tom’s Guide reports that the Goliath received 60 channels in its test and lists a 70-mile range; those figures describe that review’s conditions, not an expected result at another address. The review gives its reception pattern as 24 degrees, making aiming especially relevant. The antenna is large and difficult to install, and it has no integrated amplification; Tom’s Guide notes that it is commonly bundled with the Juice Plus preamp (Tom’s Guide antenna review).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What ATSC 3.0 means when buying an antenna
ATSC 3.0, also called NextGen TV, is a broadcast standard—not an antenna type. You still need an antenna suitable for the local stations and a television or receiver that supports the relevant standard features. Confirm local service and receiver compatibility rather than choosing an antenna solely because its packaging mentions “4K” or “NextGen TV.” PCWorld notes that some ATSC 3.0 services use DRM and that compatible equipment and broadband may be required for interactive features.
A 2020 NAB/ATSC transition guide reported approximately 1,215 UHF, 419 high-band VHF, and 39 low-band VHF full-service stations after the repack, based on the post-auction FCC database. These are historical figures from that guide, not current station counts. The guide describes UHF as suitable for anticipated ATSC 3.0 service models and low-VHF as more challenging for mobile and portable reception (NAB/ATSC transition guide).

Before mounting, check fit and installation needs
- Confirm the desired stations’ RF bands and transmitter directions at your address.
- Check the antenna’s band coverage and whether its pattern fits those directions.
- Choose a location that limits obstructions and supports secure mounting.
- Plan the coax run and whether the system will feed one TV or several.
- Check antenna dimensions, mount strength, included hardware, and installation access before working at roof height.
- After installation, scan for channels and adjust antenna direction as needed; reception can change with orientation and the surrounding environment.
PCWorld’s test scans and Tom’s Guide’s Goliath result are useful evidence about those publications’ evaluations, not a promise of how many channels any specific household will receive. No universal channel count or range predicts reception for every home.
