Northern Marianas College (NMC) closed its Saipan and Tinian campuses on Saturday, October 3, 2026, for safety assessments and cleanup. Its earlier notice cancelled classes from noon October 1 and all day October 2, and closed Saipan and Tinian offices during those periods. NMC said its Rota campus remained open for the earlier closure periods. That college notice does not establish whether CNMI public K–12 schools closed; no direct Public School System closure notice was confirmed.
What is closed, and where?
Northern Marianas College
NMC’s October 1 notice said classes scheduled from noon Thursday, October 1, and all day Friday, October 2, were cancelled. Saipan and Tinian offices closed for those periods, while the Rota campus remained open. NMC’s later notice said Saipan and Tinian campuses would also remain closed Saturday, October 3, as safety assessments and cleanup continued. The college said its Testing Center was closed and the October 3 SAT was cancelled. Northern Marianas College notices
Public K–12 schools
The available official CNMI Public School System pages did not confirm a Choi-Wan-related closure. That means the public-school status is unconfirmed here—not that schools were necessarily open or closed. Families should check the Public School System’s current official announcements rather than infer a K–12 decision from NMC’s college notice. CNMI Public School System

What were the warnings on October 3?
In its October 3, 2026, statement, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tiyan, Guam, reported a typhoon warning for Alamagan, Agrihan, and Pagan, tropical-storm warnings for Saipan and Tinian, and a flood watch for Guam and the Northern Marianas. The statement said Choi-Wan was moving northeast and away from Agrihan. These are the alert statuses at the time the statement was issued; warnings and watches can change, so check current official advisories before making decisions. NWS Tiyan local statement, October 3
What hazards did the NWS forecast?
The NWS Tiyan statement issued October 1 described forecast hazards, not confirmed damage or measurements of actual impacts. It said the storm was expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rain, hazardous surf, coastal inundation, and erosion. Its forecast figures were:
- At 7 p.m. ChST on October 1, the storm’s intensity was forecast at 45 mph; the center was about 55 miles southeast of Alamagan, moving west at 13 mph.
- Winds of 35–45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, were expected overnight and could persist through at least Sunday.
- Surf of 7–10 feet was forecast along south-facing reefs and 9–12 feet along west-facing reefs near Saipan and Tinian.
- Possible coastal inundation of 1–2 feet and significant coastal erosion were forecast.
- Near Saipan and Tinian, 4–8 inches of rain—with locally higher totals possible—were forecast by early Monday.
- For the northern islands, the forecast called for 10–16 inches of rain, with up to 20 inches possible near the storm’s center.
Each figure reflects the NWS forecast published October 1, 2026, and should not be read as a report of observed conditions. NWS Tiyan local statement, October 1

How to check current closures and storm alerts
- For college operations: check Northern Marianas College’s official announcements for campus openings, closures, testing-center changes, and exam updates.
- For public schools: check the CNMI Public School System’s official announcements. An NMC notice does not apply automatically to K–12 schools.
- For island-specific weather alerts: consult the latest National Weather Service Tiyan, Guam, advisories and local CNMI emergency-management announcements. Use the current alert rather than relying on a dated article.
What NMC told employees to do
NMC’s October 1 notice instructed employees to secure loose items outdoors, unplug nonessential electronics, back up files, move equipment and documents away from windows, cover electronics with waterproof material, and raise sensitive items off the floor where flooding might occur. These were precautions, not confirmation that flooding or damage had occurred. Northern Marianas College notice
The October 1 NWS statement defined a tropical-storm warning this way: “A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within 24 hours.” It also advised: “Shelter in place until the all-clear is given.” Follow current local emergency instructions if they differ from an older statement.
