No—Kaiwa was not developing a humanoid robot to carry a pregnancy. The viral 2025 story came from a misinterpreted interview, and the company’s founder later said the company had no plan to develop or manufacture a gestational robot. Claims about a 2026 prototype and a price below 100,000 yuan were not specifications for a pregnancy robot.
How the pregnancy-robot story started
In 2025, reports attributed to Kaiwa founder Zhang Qifeng a plan for a humanoid robot containing artificial amniotic fluid that could gestate a fetus from conception through birth. Some versions said a prototype could appear within a year and cost less than 100,000 yuan.
A Les Surligneurs fact-check traced the widely shared account to a June interview with online presenter Wen Zhengbing, recorded at the company’s premises. The interview was not filmed at the World Robot Conference, despite reports associating the supposed announcement with that event. The company, its founder and the robot were not listed in the conference program.
What Kaiwa’s founder said
According to Les Surligneurs’ account of Zhang’s later remarks to Chinese media, the reports had misinterpreted what he said. He said the company was not planning to develop or manufacture a robot that could gestate a pregnancy. The prototype and price discussed in his remarks referred to a simulated humanoid model unrelated to gestation, not a pregnancy robot.

A January 2026 fact-check likewise recounted the denial and concluded that no such Chinese robot had been developed or was in development. The early launch and price claims should therefore be treated as part of the debunked story, not as a product announcement.
Was Zhang connected to an NTU pregnancy-robot project?
No. Live Science reported that Nanyang Technological University (NTU) said Zhang Qifeng had not graduated from the university with a PhD and that NTU had conducted no research on a “gestation robot.” Claims that he held that doctorate or that the university had such a project are not supported.

What artificial-womb research actually covers
The real research most often brought into this discussion has a different purpose and begins at a different point. Live Science describes the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s EXTEND device as a womb-like environment being developed to support babies born extremely prematurely. Its eventual goal is to support them after birth toward a later gestational stage.
That is neonatal support after extremely premature birth—not a humanoid, and not a demonstrated system for carrying a pregnancy from conception to birth outside a body. The available reporting does not establish a viable full-gestation human artificial womb, a consumer device or a near-term timetable for one.

- The reported conference unveiling was unsupported; the interview behind the story was recorded earlier at the company’s premises.
- The reported timeline and price related to a simulated humanoid model, according to the later account of Zhang’s remarks, not a gestational robot.
- Experimental support for extremely premature newborns should not be described as an artificial womb capable of a full pregnancy.
