China’s planned lunar hopper is part of the Chang’e-7 mission, which aims to survey the Moon’s south pole and investigate permanently shadowed areas for traces of water ice. “Flying” refers to hopping mobility, not conventional flight. Official mission reporting reviewed here does not confirm that the robot has six legs. A government-hosted report updated August 20, 2026, said the spacecraft was undergoing pre-launch preparations, with launch planned for the second half of 2026—not that it had launched.

What China’s lunar hopper is designed to do

Chang’e-7 is a planned Chinese robotic mission to survey the lunar south pole, including its environment and resources. Mission reporting describes a small “flying robot” intended to hop into permanently shadowed pits, where it can investigate for ice. These shadowed areas are difficult for a conventional surface rover to reach.

“Flying” is a shorthand for the planned hopping approach. China Manned Space Agency spokesperson Zhang Jingbo described Chang’e-7’s detection approach as involving “orbiting, landing, roving and hopping” to survey the south pole. The hopper is one part of that broader mission, not a conventional aircraft or the mission’s only exploration vehicle. Government-hosted Chang’e-7 mission report

Is the robot really six-legged?

The Chang’e-7 connection is supported by official mission reporting, but the six-leg detail is not established by the official sources reviewed. They discuss the hopping robot and legged movement as a technology goal without specifying the hopper’s leg count. It is therefore more accurate to call it a Chang’e-7 hopper or hopping probe than a confirmed six-legged robot.

The reviewed official sources also do not establish the hopper’s dimensions, mass, speed, or range. Those specifications should not be inferred from the “flying robot” description.

Chang’e-7’s status and planned launch

In a report updated August 20, 2026, China’s government said the Chang’e-7 probe and Long March 5 Y14 launch vehicle had reached the Wenchang launch site and were in pre-launch preparations. The report said the flight was planned for the second half of 2026. That is a schedule, not confirmation that launch has occurred. Read the government-hosted status report

China lunar exploration program chief designer Wu Weiren said Chang’e-7 is intended to look for traces of ice at the south pole, investigate the environment and weather, and survey landforms. These are mission objectives; the probe’s presence at Wenchang does not mean those investigations have already taken place. China Daily report on Chang’e-7

Chang’e-7 is not Chang’e-8

Chang’e-8 is a separate planned mission, not the mission carrying Chang’e-7’s hopper. China National Space Administration describes Chang’e-8 as including a lander, rover, and operation robot for surface exploration, experiments, and technology tests, with launch planned around 2028. Its operation robot should not be conflated with Chang’e-7’s hopping probe. CNSA overview of Chang’e-8
