China is planning a deep-sea research facility in the South China Sea, described as a “space station” because it would serve as a base for scientists underwater—not because it would orbit Earth. A 2025 report put the proposed site 2,000 metres (6,560 feet) below the surface; the 6,000-foot figure in the original headline is rounded. The facility remains a plan, not an established operating station.
What China’s deep-sea “space station” is
The project is described as a research facility for studying cold-seep ecosystems: deep-ocean environments where fluids seep from the seafloor. The “space station” label is a metaphor for a place where researchers could work during extended missions. It is not an orbital station.
China’s draft 15th Five-Year Plan outline for 2026–2030 includes preparing to build the facility, according to Xinhua’s March 6, 2026 report. That wording signals a planned project; it does not establish that construction is complete or that the facility is in use. A February 2025 South China Morning Post report places the proposed facility in the South China Sea at 2,000 metres below the surface, or 6,560 feet. Who it could accommodate
The 2025 report says the planned facility is intended to accommodate six scientists on missions lasting up to one month. These are reported plans, not verified operating capacity or evidence that crews have stayed there.
What is known about timing and status
The South China Morning Post reported an expected operational date around 2030. In March 2026, Xinhua reported that preparing to build the station appeared among 28 major projects in the draft outline of China’s 2026–2030 plan. The 28 figure refers to projects across the broader outline, not to deep-sea projects alone. Together, the reports establish a stated target and continued planning language, but do not verify construction progress or operation.
