AAP reported on October 3 that Taylah Preston was the last Australian left in the China Open women’s singles after Kimberly Birrell and Storm Hunter lost. But the WTA match pages checked at 16:10 UTC that day still listed Birrell–Marie Bouzkova and Hunter–Maria Sakkari as suspended in the second set. The reported eliminations and scores therefore were not confirmed as completed results by those official pages at that time.
What happened to the Australians at the China Open?
AAP’s October 3 report said Birrell lost to Czech player Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-4, and Hunter lost to Greek player Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-2 in 73 minutes. It said Preston advanced to the third round and was Australia’s remaining singles player. Those scores and outcomes are AAP’s account, not confirmed final results in the WTA score pages available at the time checked.
The WTA pages labelled both matches Round of 64 and showed them suspended in the second set at 16:10 UTC on October 3, 2026. That differs from the report’s description of the losses as second-round results. Check the official match pages for any subsequent completion or draw update: Bouzkova vs. Birrell and Sakkari vs. Hunter.

The WTA lists the event in Beijing, China, as a hard-court WTA 1000 tournament scheduled for September 30 to October 11, 2026. Tournament details are on the WTA China Open 2026 player list.
What to make of the report
The headline reflects AAP’s account, but the snapshot of official WTA scores available at 16:10 UTC did not establish that Birrell and Hunter’s matches had finished. The clearest reading is to treat Preston’s status as Australia’s last singles player, and the reported losses, as unconfirmed until the WTA draw or match pages show completed results.

AAP also attributed this comment to 2024 China Open champion Coco Gauff after her first match in nearly three weeks: “I think this time of the year, it’s really a final push and I think today was a good match to start of the Asian Swing,”
