China’s Tianwen-1 spacecraft landed in Mars’ Utopia Planitia on May 15, 2021, carrying the Zhurong rover; Zhurong rolled onto the surface on May 22. CNSA gives May 15 as the landing date, while a NASA educational reference lists May 14. A later analysis of Zhurong’s radar data, reported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2026, describes evidence researchers interpret as water-related sedimentary activity at the site roughly 750 million years ago. That finding concerns Mars’ geology, not evidence of life.

What landed on Mars—and when?

Tianwen-1 was China’s combined Mars orbiter, lander, and rover mission. Zhurong was the rover carried by the lander, not the name of the entire spacecraft. The National Space Science Data Center’s mission timeline records Tianwen-1’s launch on July 23, 2020, and arrival in Mars orbit on February 10, 2021.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) dates the landing in Utopia Planitia to May 15, 2021. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera educational reference lists May 14. The NASA document does not explain the one-day difference, so the reason is unclear; for a China-based chronology, May 15 is CNSA’s date. Zhurong drove from its landing platform onto the Martian surface on May 22, according to CNSA.

What was Tianwen-1 designed to do?

The mission combined orbital observations with measurements made on the ground. Its goals included studying Martian geology and internal structure, looking for evidence of past or present water, and characterizing the atmosphere and space environment. The National Space Science Data Center lists 13 scientific instruments across the orbiter and rover.

Zhurong’s instruments and measurements

The rover carried a Navigation and Terrain Camera, a Multispectral Camera, a Mars Rover Penetrating Radar, a Mars Surface Composition Detector, a Mars Rover Magnetometer, and a Mars Climate Station. The radar gathered data about shallow subsurface structure. The composition detector combined laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, short-wave infrared spectroscopy, and a micro-imaging camera. The climate station measured surface temperature, pressure, wind speed, and wind direction; the mission source also describes Zhurong as recording Martian sounds.

How far did Zhurong work?

CNSA set a planned surface task period of 90 Martian days. In its 2022 retrospective, the agency said the rover met that target by August 15, 2021, and continued working beyond it. CNSA reported 347 Martian days of rover work and 1,921 meters traveled by May 5, 2022. Those figures describe performance as of that date, not a current operating status.

A separate September 2022 report by China’s State Council, citing CNSA, gave a total of 1,480 gigabytes of raw scientific data and 1,921 meters traveled as of September 15, 2022. The same reporting described findings concerning Utopia Planitia landforms, water-bearing minerals, and geological processes. These are dated mission totals and findings, rather than updated totals.

What did Zhurong find about ancient water?

A Chinese Academy of Sciences report dated January 8, 2026, describes researchers’ analysis of Zhurong radar data from beneath the landing site. They report a roughly four-meter-thick, continuous sedimentary layer with centimeter-scale layering; craters are buried beneath it. The researchers interpret the radar observations as evidence of significant aqueous activity at the site approximately 750 million years ago.

The report says the observed layering is consistent with deposition in a water-related setting such as a shallow sea or large lake. That is the researchers’ interpretation of geological evidence, not proof that a particular body of water existed in a specific form, and not a discovery of life. The report attributes this explanation to study author Liu Yike, who says uniformity and continuity of the sedimentary layer argue against volcanic eruptions or wind-driven processes.

Is Zhurong still active?

The cited mission updates provide historical performance figures through 2022, and the 2026 scientific report analyzes data Zhurong collected. They do not establish whether the rover is currently operating or communicating with Earth as of October 4, 2026. Analysis published later from stored data does not by itself show that the rover remains active, so its present status cannot be confirmed from these sources.
