Chile’s 2026 Desierto Florido—the “flowering desert”—has spread across an estimated 17,000 square kilometres of the Atacama Region, according to a CONAF estimate reported by the Associated Press on October 1. The report described it as the most extensive bloom since 1997 and attributed the heavy rainfall behind it to a “super El Niño.” The spectacle is not one continuous flower field: it is a seasonal emergence of many species after unusual winter rain, and it is fragile. Visitors should use official access updates and stay on roads and marked trails.

What is the Desierto Florido?

Desierto Florido is an episodic flowering of desert plants in Chile’s Atacama Region. More than 200 plant species can flower during the phenomenon, according to CONAF’s 2026 visitor guidance. Annuals and plants that spend dry periods dormant below ground respond when sufficient moisture arrives; the resulting blooms appear across different places rather than forming one uninterrupted field.

CONAF describes more than 15 millimetres of unusual winter rain on the coastal Atacama Region as a trigger. That is a local description, not a rainfall threshold for the entire Atacama Desert. Chile’s biodiversity platform describes the broader relationship between flowering events and the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The specific claim that a “super El Niño” drove the heavy 2026 rainfall was reported by the Associated Press; the available evidence does not establish El Niño as the sole cause of the bloom.

How extensive was the 2026 bloom?

The Associated Press reported on October 1 that CONAF estimated flowering across about 17,000 square kilometres (6,560 square miles), calling it the largest event since 1997. These are reported estimates and comparisons, not a guarantee that every part of that area is in flower or open to visitors.

AP also reported rainfall totals of 160–190 millimetres (about 6–7 inches) in some locations. It said some records had no comparable totals since measurements began in the 1950s. The figures apply to some locations, not the whole region.

Why do desert plants flower after rain?

Many Atacama plants persist through dry periods in dormant forms, including bulbs, rhizomes, tubers, roots, and seeds. When rain supplies enough moisture, plants can grow, flower, and set seed. CONAF’s Desierto Florido National Park profile says much of the plant community remains dormant in the upper 15 centimetres of soil for much of the time.

The flowering community includes more than showy annuals. CONAF’s park profile lists cuerno de cabra (Skytanthus acutus), copao cactus (Eulychnia acida), gatito cactus (Cumulopuntia sphaerica), clavel del aire (Tillandsia landbeckii), pata de guanaco (Cistanthe longiscarpa), yellow añañuca (Zephyranthes bagnoldii), suspiro (Nolana rostrata), and terciopelo (Argylia radiata).

When and where can visitors see flowers?

The Atacama Regional Government’s outlook dated August 20, 2026, projected early flowering from the second half of August, expanding blooms from September, and the greatest diversity and abundance around mid-October. That was a forecast, not a current condition report. The same notice said some roads were damaged and urged visitors to wait for official updates. Check current regional and CONAF information before setting out; the forecast does not confirm road access or flowering at a particular site today.

The outlook identified the coast around Freirina and Huasco, Llanos de Challe National Park, Desierto Florido National Park, and Travesía as locations for planned visitor information points. Those planning references do not guarantee that flowers are currently present or that roads and visitor facilities are open.

CONAF locates Desierto Florido National Park in Copiapó commune, about 30 kilometres south of Copiapó city and 85 kilometres north of Vallenar. Its two sectors, Travesía and Chañarcillo, are separated by Ruta 5 Norte. The park covers 57,107.4 hectares (about 571 square kilometres): Travesía accounts for 37,173.9 hectares and Chañarcillo for 19,935.6 hectares. Confirm boundaries, entry arrangements, and road conditions with official authorities before choosing a route.

How to visit without damaging the bloom

  • Stay on established roads and marked trails; do not drive or walk through flowering areas.
  • Do not pick flowers or collect plants, seeds, or other natural material.
  • Leave pets behind and respect wildlife.
  • Carry out all rubbish.
  • Use tourism services registered with SERNATUR, as CONAF recommends, and follow current instructions from local authorities and park staff.

These precautions matter because the bloom is brief and the plants must survive long dry intervals between favorable rains. Chile’s environmental regulator, SMA, also issued 2026 conservation measures for renewable-energy projects with environmental approvals in Antofagasta, Atacama, and Coquimbo. Its notice named threatened flora including garra de león and Pintoa chilensis. Those measures concern approved projects, not a general visitor-access order, but they underscore the need to protect the region’s native plants.
