A Chennai passenger says he moved from seat 27B to 14F, then to 1F, after making polite requests to staff. The account is an anecdote reported by Hindustan Times, not a verified Air India Express upgrade method: the outlet said it had not independently confirmed the events.
What the passenger said happened
In a report published October 1, 2026, Hindustan Times recounted X user Narayanan Hariharan’s claim that he first asked at check-in to change seats. He said the request moved him from 27B to emergency-row seat 14F.
Hariharan said he tried again at the boarding gate and was moved from 14F to 1F. He described his first approach this way: “Smiled, used her name, enquired about her day, and politely requested at the check-in counter. Moved to emergency row (14F).” Read the Hindustan Times report.
Why he thought the requests worked
Hariharan credited his courteous approach, saying: “The staff deal with tired, grumpy passengers all day. One person being nice is easy to say yes to.” That is his interpretation of the staff’s decisions, not a confirmed explanation from the airline.

What the story does—and does not—confirm
- Reported: Hariharan said he received two seat changes, from 27B to 14F and then to 1F.
- Not independently verified: Hindustan Times explicitly said it had not independently verified the account. The report does not say Air India Express confirmed the moves or their reason.
- No established technique: The report provides no airline policy, success rate, or evidence that a polite request reliably earns a complimentary upgrade. It also does not establish that an apparently empty seat is enough to permit a move. The report’s discussion of reader comments does not change that.
A request may be welcomed or declined; this single account cannot establish what will happen on another flight. One commenter’s claim that the approach would not work on IndiGo is likewise not evidence comparing airline policies.
