Chennai-based entrepreneur Sundara Rajan says he worked 6.5 days a week and 10–14 hours a day at L&T Construction project sites between 1986 and 1994. The account is his recollection, reported by Hindustan Times; it does not establish that those hours were an L&T-wide schedule.

What Sundara Rajan recalled about his L&T job

In a post quoted by Hindustan Times on October 1, 2026, Rajan described his experience at L&T Construction project sites from 1986 to 1994. He wrote: “Fun fact: I worked in L&T Construction, project sites work for 6.5 days a week and 10-14 Hrs a day. Project Manager would lead from the front. This was from 1986-94.”

Rajan also recalled that personal errands could mean taking several hours’ permission during the workweek: “I used to take 4 hrs permission on week days for personal work like banking, Sending Post, Calling Home, Haircut…” Both descriptions are attributed to his recollection, not independently verified records of company policy or conditions at other sites.

Why the account prompted debate

Responses to the post, as summarized by Hindustan Times, differed over whether such long hours should be viewed as dedication to demanding project work or as exploitation. The discussion also raised work-life balance and employee wellbeing. These were reactions in a social-media debate, not findings about the employment conditions Rajan described.

Rajan’s own reply referred to lean periods during project work, improvements he associated with digitalisation, thin margins, and the need for continuity of attention. Those remarks reflect his view; his comment about margins is not a verified industry statistic.

How the Sunday-work controversy fits—and where it does not

Hindustan Times placed the post alongside earlier controversy over L&T chairman S. N. Subrahmanyan’s remarks about wishing employees could work on Sundays and asking what they do at home. That context may help explain why Rajan’s account drew attention, but it does not show that the two episodes involved the same workplace rules or period.

The report attributes Rajan’s account to an X post but does not provide a verifiable link to the original post or documentary evidence confirming the precise hours. It also does not establish how representative his experience was. His account should therefore be understood as one person’s recollection, not a general claim about L&T or the construction industry.
