Extracts from about one-third of 34 everyday plastic products promoted fat-cell formation in a 2022 laboratory study. The result shows activity in a mouse cell model—not that ordinary plastic use causes obesity in people.
What the study found
Johannes Völker, Felicity Ashcroft, Åsa Vedøy, and Martin Wagner tested chemical mixtures extracted from 34 plastic consumer products. In a mouse cell model, extracts from about one-third of the products promoted preadipocyte proliferation and differentiation into fat cells. The resulting cells were larger and contained more triglycerides than cells treated with rosiglitazone, a reference compound. That comparison applies to the laboratory assay, not to effects in people. The study was published in 2022.
The researchers detected 55,300 chemical features and tentatively identified 629 unique compounds; 11 of the tentative identifications were known metabolism-disrupting chemicals. A detected feature is not necessarily an identified chemical, and a tentative identification is not confirmation that a compound is present as a product ingredient.

What “in vitro” means here
The researchers assessed extracts in murine 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, cells that can develop into fat cells. This is an in-vitro experiment: it tests biological activity in cells outside a living organism. It does not measure human exposure, body weight, or obesity risk.

Because the assay tested mixtures, the result does not show which individual chemical caused the activity. The authors found that most extracts did not activate the PPARγ and glucocorticoid receptor pathways they assessed. They infer that other mechanisms—and likely unidentified metabolism-disrupting chemicals—may account for much of the observed effect. No single causal compound was established.
How a separate 2023 study differs
A separate 2023 preprint examined 36 plastic food-contact articles from five countries using receptor assays and non-target mass spectrometry. It reported activity involving PXR, PPARγ, estrogen receptor alpha, and androgen receptor signaling, as well as product-specific chemical fingerprints. This work addresses receptor activity in a different sample set; it is not a direct replication of the 2022 fat-cell differentiation experiment. What the findings do—and do not—say about health
The cell results support a limited conclusion: chemicals extracted from some of the tested products had adipogenic activity under the study’s laboratory conditions. They do not establish the amount, route, or duration of human exposure during ordinary use, or show that such exposure causes obesity. Chemistry World’s 2022 coverage likewise describes the finding as fat-cell formation in vitro, rather than a human health outcome. Read its report.
The authors wrote that daily-use plastics “can, therefore, be a relevant yet underestimated environmental factor contributing to obesity.” That is their interpretation of mixture activity in a laboratory model, not a finding from a human clinical or epidemiological study.

Can this study guide what to buy or avoid?
No. The researchers did not compare alternative products for safety or test whether particular changes in use reduce exposure. The results therefore do not support ranking plastics, naming a safer replacement, or recommending a specific purchase. They also do not show that all plastics or all products behave alike: the finding applies to extracts from the products tested.
