Marco Palestra is reportedly likely to feature in Chelsea’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Portsmouth over the weekend of 3–4 October 2026. RotoWire, citing Football London, says manager Xabi Alonso wants to give him minutes after he returned to training at Cobham. Chelsea has confirmed that training return, but has not confirmed Palestra’s selection or appearance in the friendly.
What is known about Palestra and the Portsmouth friendly?
The reported prospect is a possible step back toward match fitness, not a confirmed competitive return. RotoWire’s 3 October update attributes the expectation of friendly involvement to Football London. The available club updates do not confirm that the match took place, name a lineup, or say whether Palestra played or how many minutes he might have received. RotoWire’s update should therefore be read as secondary reporting, not official team news.
Chelsea’s latest cited official update, published on 28 September, says Palestra was among the players back training at Cobham after a week off for players not away on international duty. The report does not mention the Portsmouth fixture or give a new medical assessment or return date. Chelsea’s training report confirms training, not match availability.

Why has Palestra been out?
Chelsea said on 11 September that Palestra sustained a quad injury in the build-up to the Premier League opener against Fulham. At that point, he had not made his competitive Chelsea debut. Manager Xabi Alonso described the recovery as nearing its final stages, while making the timing conditional: “The injury is something on the quad,” he said, adding, “He’s almost in the last stages of the recovery, so we will see. If not [fit for] Brentford, then Bournemouth for sure.” The quote and update were published by Chelsea on 11 September 2026; they were an estimate, not a guaranteed return date.

A 17 September Chelsea preview said Alonso was still assessing whether Palestra could make his competitive debut against Brentford, with a final decision due after the last training session. That is historical context and does not establish his current selection status. Chelsea’s Brentford team-news update was published before the latest training report.
Has Palestra played for Chelsea before?
He featured for Chelsea in pre-season, including a start against Real Sociedad on 15 August 2026. That appearance was not a competitive match, and the current update says he had yet to make his competitive Chelsea debut. Chelsea’s match report lists him in the starting XI.

Chelsea’s player context describes Palestra as a versatile full-back. He joined from Atalanta after a 2025/26 loan at Cagliari; during pre-season, Alonso used him on both the right and left. That background does not establish which position he would play against Portsmouth. Chelsea’s August profile and Alonso comments provide the positional context.
Could he be available for Bournemouth on 10 October?
RotoWire’s 3 October report says Palestra was aiming to be available for Chelsea’s 10 October Bournemouth match. That is a reported aim, not confirmation that he will be selected or fit to play. The cited Chelsea updates do not provide a confirmed Bournemouth availability decision.
