To check whether a domain name is registered, enter the full name in ICANN Lookup. The tool returns current registration data, but a missing record is not a guarantee that you can register the name. Confirm availability and terms with a registrar before proceeding.
Check a domain name’s registration
- Open ICANN Lookup.
- Enter the complete domain name, including its ending, such as
example.com, and submit the query. - Review the registration data shown. If the name is registered, the result may identify the registrar and other registration details; it may not show the registrant’s personal identity.
- If the lookup does not show a current registration record, check the name with a registrar. TLD rules and availability can vary, so treat the registrar’s current result and terms as the next step before attempting to register.
ICANN says Lookup returns current registration data directly from registry operators and/or registrars in real time. It is a snapshot, not a reservation or promise that a name is available, that its registrant will sell it, or that an expiration date means it will become freely available on that date.
What the result can—and cannot—tell you
A lookup is a way to inspect registration data, not necessarily to identify a person. Public fields may be limited, and a domain registrant is the individual or entity that registered the name. The registrant contracts with a registrar and manages domain settings through that registrar.
If the name is registered and you want to pursue it, use an available contact route or ask the sponsoring registrar about its process. ICANN recommends checking Lookup first for public data. For requests for nonpublic gTLD registration data, ICANN describes its Registration Data Request Service (RDRS) for participating registrars; otherwise, contact the sponsoring registrar to learn its process. Eligibility and disclosure are not guaranteed.

RDAP and WHOIS: which lookup should you use?
Start with ICANN Lookup, which queries RDAP. ICANN describes RDAP as a protocol for accessing registration data and as the eventual replacement for WHOIS. As of 28 January 2025, RDAP became the definitive source for gTLD registration information in place of sunsetted WHOIS services. ICANN says its domain query may redirect to the relevant gTLD registry operator’s WHOIS service when requested information is unavailable through RDAP, so WHOIS can still appear as a fallback.
This transition statement applies to gTLD registration information; it should not be generalized to every type of domain ending. RDAP supports internationalization, secure access, and differentiated access, but using it does not mean that all registrant details will be public.

If the name is registered, expired, or unavailable
If you want to buy a registered domain
A lookup may help you identify the registrar, but it does not establish that the registrant is willing to sell or provide direct contact details. Use a contact option that is actually available or ask the registrar about its process; a request is not a guarantee of a sale or disclosure.
If you previously owned the domain
If the domain was deleted, canceled, or terminated under a registration agreement or domain-use policy, consult the registrar’s website and registration agreement for the applicable process. ICANN’s guidance on lost domain names also notes that a person may reach an agreement with the current registrant. Neither route guarantees recovery.

Registering a name you found available
ICANN Lookup is a registration-data lookup tool, not the registrar for the name. If a registrar confirms the name is available and you want it, choose a registrar and review its current registration and renewal terms, supported TLDs, domain-management controls, and any privacy or disclosure features. The registrant manages the domain through the registrar with which they contract.
