Cheap Windows VPS hosting with RDP can start below $6 per month, but $6 is rarely a permanent, fully equipped Windows price. OVHcloud lists a Windows VPS-1 at $4.54/month, while IONOS offers stronger NVMe configurations at $6/month during a three-month promotion. Windows licensing, renewal pricing, taxes, backups, and RDS licensing can change the real cost.
The practical choice depends on whether you need a basic remote server, a comfortable Windows desktop, NVMe storage, managed support, or several simultaneous users. A $6 plan can work for light administration or a small service, but 4 GB RAM is a more credible starting point for general RDP work.
Key takeaways
- OVHcloud lists its Windows VPS-1 at $4.54/month with 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD, unlimited traffic, and a daily backup of the previous 24 hours.
- IONOS shows a VPS L+ promotion at $6/month for three months with a one-year term, 6 vCores, 8 GB RAM, and 240 GB NVMe, but the displayed regular price is $21/month.
- InterServer separates Linux pricing from Windows pricing: Linux cloud compute starts at $3/month, while Windows Cloud Compute with Remote Desktop starts at $10/month.
- OVHcloud VPS-1 uses SSD rather than NVMe; OVHcloud lists SSD NVMe on VPS-2 and higher in the displayed Windows range.
- RDP provides remote access but does not provide unlimited simultaneous users or included Remote Desktop Services client access licenses.
Cheap Windows VPS Hosting: what can you really get for $6?
A $6 budget can buy a usable Windows VPS, but the advertised price needs careful interpretation. The price may be promotional, tied to a one-year term, limited to a particular country or data center, based on Linux rather than Windows, or presented before taxes and add-ons.
The clearest advertised sub-$6 Windows option in the research snapshot is OVHcloud VPS-1 at $4.54/month. The plan lists 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, and 40 GB SSD. IONOS provides more storage and memory at a $6 promotional price, but the IONOS VPS L+ example rises to a displayed regular price of $21/month after the introductory period. InterServer’s $6 configuration is not a Windows RDP plan: InterServer lists Windows Cloud Compute with Remote Desktop from $10/month.

Which provider has the cheapest Windows VPS with RDP?
OVHcloud has the lowest clearly advertised Windows VPS entry price in this comparison, at $4.54/month for VPS-1. The displayed plan includes 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD, unlimited traffic, 500 Mbps public bandwidth, and a daily backup of the previous 24 hours.
OVHcloud VPS-1 is attractive for one user performing light administration, running a small Windows service, hosting a basic website, or using a low-intensity application. The 40 GB disk is the main limitation. Windows updates, system files, applications, logs, and temporary files can make 40 GB restrictive, so monitor free space from the beginning.
VPS-1 is not the right choice if NVMe is mandatory. OVHcloud lists ordinary SSD on VPS-1 and SSD NVMe on VPS-2 and higher in the displayed Windows range. VPS-2 costs $8.50/month and provides 4 vCores, 8 GB RAM, 75 GB SSD NVMe, unlimited traffic, 1 Gbps public bandwidth, and the same displayed daily-backup description.
OVHcloud states that Windows VPS products are available across different data centers, but local-zone features can vary. Confirm the selected location, taxes, billing period, and final checkout total.
Is IONOS the best cheap NVMe Windows VPS?
IONOS offers the strongest introductory hardware-to-price combination in this comparison, especially for readers who want NVMe storage and more than 4 GB of RAM. The trade-off is that the advertised $2, $4, or $6 prices apply for three months with a one-year term, not indefinitely.
| IONOS VPS+ example | Promotional price | Displayed regular price | vCores | RAM | NVMe storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS S+ | $2/month for three months | $5/month shown | 2 | 2 GB | 90 GB |
| VPS M+ | $4/month for three months | $11/month shown | 4 | 4 GB | 120 GB |
| VPS L+ | $6/month for three months | $21/month shown | 6 | 8 GB | 240 GB |
The IONOS VPS L+ example costs $18 during the first three promotional months and $189 over the remaining nine months if the displayed $21 regular price applies throughout the rest of the one-year term. That is $207 for the first year, or an average of $17.25 per month before taxes and optional services. The calculation illustrates why a promotional monthly price should not be treated as the long-term cost.
IONOS lists Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025 images, full root access, a KVM console, unlimited traffic, and up to 1 Gbps external connectivity. IONOS also lists data center locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain. Samsung NVMe SSD storage is identified on the VPS+ page.

IONOS lists Plesk administration at an additional $6/month, an additional IPv4 address at $5/month, and cloud backup from $0.065/GB/month. Basic RDP access does not require Plesk, so adding Plesk to a budget server may be unnecessary unless the user specifically needs its hosting-management interface. IONOS notes that state and local taxes apply on its general VPS information page.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose IONOS VPS M+ for a more balanced introductory RDP configuration, or VPS L+ when 8 GB RAM and 240 GB NVMe are worth accepting the higher regular price. VPS S+ may boot Windows and support light tasks, but 2 GB RAM leaves less room for browsers, updates, antivirus, and graphical applications.
What does InterServer actually charge for a Windows RDP VPS?
InterServer lists Windows Cloud Compute with Windows Server and Remote Desktop from $10/month. InterServer also lists Linux cloud compute from $3/month and a $6 two-slice configuration with 1 core, 4 GB memory, 80 GB SSD, and 4 TB transfer, but those lower prices are not presented as Windows RDP plans.
InterServer is therefore useful as an honest Windows price benchmark. A reader who sees “VPS from $3” or a $6 cloud configuration should not assume that Windows licensing and RDP are included at that price. Confirm the Windows-specific configuration, storage type, traffic allocation, and billing terms in the ordering flow.
InterServer may suit a buyer who accepts a roughly $10 starting point and values clearer separation between Linux and Windows products. InterServer is not the best match for a strict $6 Windows budget based on the displayed pricing.

Contabo advertises a Windows license at €4.99/month, separate from the underlying VPS price. A low-priced Contabo Linux VPS plus the Windows license is therefore not a $6 Windows VPS; the complete cost is the VPS charge plus €4.99, before any other applicable charges.
Contabo can be worth checking when a selected VPS has enough CPU, RAM, and storage and the combined price remains competitive. The final total depends on the VPS configuration, location, billing term, and licensing option. Do not use old plan names or search-result snippets as current specifications without confirming the checkout page.
Contabo’s Windows licensing information and Remote Desktop material describe Windows VPS use cases, but the license add-on does not automatically include Microsoft Office, SQL Server, third-party software, or additional RDS client access licenses. Review the Contabo Windows license terms and price before purchase.
Is Hostwinds worth paying more for managed Windows hosting?
Hostwinds is a managed alternative rather than a $6 provider. The displayed entry managed Windows VPS has 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB storage, and 1 TB bandwidth at a promotional $14.94/month, with a displayed regular price of $22.99/month.

Ideal for low-latency gaming, 4K/8K streaming, and high-speed internet connections.
- RJ45 Connectors & Wide Compatibility: Cat8 Ethernet cable with two shielded RJ45 connectors; compatible with networking switches, IP cameras, routers, Nintendo Switch, modems, PS3, PS4, Xbox, patch panels, servers, smart TVs, and more; works with Cat7, Cat6, Cat5e, and Cat5 devices
- Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.
Managed support can be valuable when the buyer wants help with operating-system issues and recovery, but “managed” does not necessarily mean that the provider manages every application, security decision, licensing obligation, or custom configuration. The entry plan’s 1 GB RAM is also a poor choice for a comfortable browser-heavy Windows desktop.
What is a Windows VPS, and what does RDP mean?
A Windows VPS is a virtual machine running Windows Server on a hosting provider’s physical infrastructure. A typical VPS includes allocated virtual CPU, memory, virtual disk storage, a public IP address, provider networking, administrator access, and a control panel or console for rebooting and recovery.
RDP, or Remote Desktop Protocol, is the remote-access method used to connect to the Windows machine. “Windows VPS,” “RDP VPS,” and “remote desktop VPS” are often used interchangeably in provider marketing, but RDP access does not create a separate licensing category or guarantee unlimited interactive users.

A normal Windows Server installation commonly permits administrative remote connections. Hosting several people as interactive users, publishing applications, or operating a full Remote Desktop Services deployment generally requires RDS licensing. Microsoft states in its RDS client access license documentation that each user or device connecting to a Windows Server RDS session host needs an RDS CAL.
Microsoft also documents a 120-day RDS licensing grace period. The grace period is not a lawful permanent substitute for purchasing or assigning the required licenses. A Windows Server image license and RDS CALs are separate issues.
What specifications are sufficient for Windows RDP?
For Windows RDP, RAM usually matters before storage capacity. Windows Server consumes memory for the operating system, services, updates, security tools, and caching before a user opens a browser or application.
| Workload | Practical starting point | Suitable tasks | Likely limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light administration | 1–2 vCPU; 2 GB RAM; 30–40 GB SSD or NVMe | Occasional administration, scheduled scripts, small services | Browsers, updates, and graphical applications may feel constrained |
| General single-user RDP | 2–4 vCPU; 4 GB RAM; 50–80 GB SSD or NVMe; at least 1 TB transfer | Browser use, office-style administration, lightweight development, one active user | Heavy multitasking and large applications may still need more RAM |
| Better general-purpose server | 4 vCPU; 8 GB RAM; 75–100 GB NVMe | More browser tabs, development tools, small databases, one or two users subject to licensing | Not suitable for demanding graphics, gaming, or large databases |
| Heavy or multi-user workload | More than 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM; workload-specific storage and licensing | Several simultaneous users, published applications, larger databases, automation | Requires capacity planning, RDS licensing, security design, and a larger budget |
A 1 GB or 2 GB plan may technically boot Windows Server but can perform poorly over RDP when a browser, graphical tool, antivirus scan, Windows Update, or swap activity is running. A large NVMe disk cannot compensate for insufficient RAM or weak CPU allocation.

NVMe is a storage protocol designed for flash storage over PCI Express. NVMe generally offers lower latency and higher potential I/O than SATA SSD storage, which can help with Windows boot operations, updates, application launches, temporary files, and database workloads.
NVMe does not guarantee a particular real-world speed. Providers can use different hardware, virtualization layers, shared storage systems, and performance policies. Without reproducible independent benchmarks, treat “NVMe” as a storage specification rather than proof that one provider’s VPS will feel faster than another provider’s VPS.
Provider listings illustrate why the distinction matters: OVHcloud lists 40 GB SSD on VPS-1 and 75 GB SSD NVMe on VPS-2, while IONOS lists NVMe capacity across the VPS+ examples. Storage capacity and storage type should be recorded separately when comparing plans.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Which Windows Server version should you choose?
Choose Windows Server 2025 for a new deployment when the required applications support it, choose Windows Server 2022 when broader compatibility and a mature environment matter more, and use Windows Server 2019 only when a specific legacy application requires it.
IONOS lists Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025 images. Confirm whether the chosen provider supports reinstallation, snapshots, recovery, and in-place upgrades before selecting an image.
Microsoft’s RDS documentation covers Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019, and 2016. Microsoft documents version compatibility rules for RDS CALs: a later-version CAL can generally access an earlier session host, while an earlier CAL cannot be used to access a later Windows Server version. Review Microsoft’s supported RDS configurations and version guidance for the exact deployment.
A Windows VPS normally supplies Windows Server, not a conventional Windows 11 desktop license. Windows Server can differ from Windows 11 in interface, application compatibility, Microsoft Store availability, driver support, licensing, and hardware acceleration. Readers wanting a personal Windows 11-style cloud computer should compare a cloud PC product rather than assuming every RDP VPS is equivalent.
How should you calculate the real monthly price?
Use this calculation before comparing providers:
VPS base price
+ Windows license fee, if separate
+ backup fee
+ additional IPv4 fee
+ control-panel fee
+ storage or snapshot fee
+ taxes
= actual monthly cost
Record both the first-term price and the regular or renewal price. Also record the effective first-year cost when a promotion lasts only a few months.

|---|---|
| Is the price for Windows or Linux? | Linux entry pricing is often much lower than Windows pricing. |
| Is Windows pre-installed or licensed? | An image, activation, and a permitted commercial license are separate things to verify. |
| Is the price promotional? | A low first-term price may rise substantially at renewal. |
| Is a one-year term required? | The advertised monthly figure may depend on a payment commitment. |
| Are backups included? | A snapshot or one daily restore point may not provide a complete backup history. |
| Are IPv4, Plesk, or taxes extra? | Add-ons can materially change a budget comparison. |
What is the difference between a snapshot and a backup?
A snapshot is a point-in-time image, usually stored within the provider’s environment. An automated backup is a retained copy that may offer several restore points. An external backup is stored outside the VPS provider or region and provides better protection against provider-level or regional failures.
OVHcloud advertises a daily backup of the previous 24 hours on the displayed Windows plans. Hostwinds advertises snapshots and optional backups. Neither description should automatically be interpreted as a long backup history or an independently tested disaster-recovery service.
Before installing important software, create or activate a recovery option and test how to restore it. A cheap VPS without a tested recovery path can become expensive after a failed update, accidental firewall change, ransomware incident, or disk problem.

How should you secure a public Windows VPS?
RDP should not be treated as safe by default. Enabling Remote Desktop exposes a network-accessible service, so harden the server before using it for important work.
- Change the initial administrator password and use a long, unique password.
- Create a separate administrative account and restrict use of the built-in Administrator account where practical.
- Install all current Windows Server updates.
- Confirm that Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are enabled.
- Keep Network Level Authentication enabled where possible.
- Allow RDP only from trusted IP ranges through the Windows Firewall and provider firewall.
- Use a VPN, private network, RD Gateway, bastion host, or another restricted access layer when the use case warrants it.
- Use MFA-capable remote access where available.
- Configure backups before installing important applications.
- Test provider-console access and recovery before changing firewall rules.
Microsoft recommends keeping Network Level Authentication enabled where possible and using strong, unique passwords for accounts allowed to connect. Microsoft describes RD Gateway as a way to encapsulate RDP in HTTPS and support conditional access and MFA integration in its RDS architecture and security overview.
Changing the RDP port alone does not make a public server secure. A VPN, IP allowlist, RD Gateway, private network, or zero-trust access layer can reduce exposure more meaningfully than relying on a nonstandard port.

Which Windows VPS should you choose?
- Choose OVHcloud when the priority is the lowest clearly advertised Windows VPS price and 4 GB RAM is sufficient. Choose VPS-2 instead of VPS-1 when NVMe and 8 GB RAM matter more than staying below $6.
- Choose IONOS when introductory pricing, NVMe storage, and larger memory or disk specifications matter more than a stable long-term $6 price. Calculate the renewal cost before accepting the one-year term.
- Choose InterServer when you accept a Windows starting price around $10 and want clearer separation between Linux and Windows products.
- Choose Contabo when you are comfortable adding the advertised €4.99/month Windows license to the selected VPS and calculating the complete checkout total yourself.
- Choose Hostwinds when managed support, snapshots, monitoring, and support features are worth paying more for. Hostwinds is not a strict-budget $6 choice.
- Choose a cloud PC instead of a VPS when you want a conventional personal Windows desktop and do not want to administer Windows Server, RDP security, backups, and licensing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a $6 Windows VPS really possible?
A $6 Windows VPS is possible as a promotional or entry-level advertised price, but it is uncommon as a permanent, fully equipped price. OVHcloud lists a Windows VPS-1 at $4.54/month, while IONOS lists a $6 VPS L+ promotion for three months with a one-year term and a displayed regular price of $21/month.
Does an RDP VPS include unlimited users?
No. RDP is the remote-access protocol, not unlimited multi-user licensing. Microsoft states that each user or device connecting to a Windows Server Remote Desktop Services session host needs an RDS CAL; a provider’s Windows VPS price does not automatically include those CALs.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is NVMe necessary for a Windows VPS?
NVMe can improve storage responsiveness for boot operations, updates, application launches, temporary files, and databases, but adequate RAM and CPU matter first for RDP. NVMe also does not guarantee a particular real-world performance level without independent testing.
Can a Windows VPS run Windows 11?
A Windows VPS normally provides Windows Server rather than a standard Windows 11 desktop license. Readers who need a conventional Windows 11-style personal desktop should compare a cloud PC or virtual-desktop product and verify its licensing and application compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: OVHcloud is the clearest advertised low-price Windows VPS choice at $4.54/month, but its entry plan uses 40 GB SSD rather than NVMe. IONOS offers substantially stronger introductory NVMe configurations, including 8 GB RAM and 240 GB NVMe at a displayed $6/month promotional price, but its displayed regular price is $21/month. InterServer provides the more honest Windows benchmark at about $10/month, Contabo charges separately for its Windows license, and Hostwinds is the managed-support upgrade rather than a budget winner.
For light administration, a $6-class plan can be adequate. For a comfortable single-user RDP desktop, target at least 4 GB RAM; for heavier multitasking, 8 GB RAM is safer. Verify the final price, Windows license, RDS requirements, storage type, backup retention, location, taxes, and renewal terms before ordering.
