A cheap fanless 2.5GbE switch can add faster wired connections without an internal fan, but the right choice depends first on port count and whether you need management features. The TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 and QNAP QSW-1105-5T each have five 2.5GbE ports; the TRENDnet TEG-S380 V2 has eight. All three are described by their manufacturers as fanless, and the cited models are unmanaged rather than options for configuring VLANs.

How to choose a cheap fanless 2.5GbE switch

  1. Count the ports you will use. Include the connection to your router or existing network and every wired device, then allow for likely additions. Five ports can be tight once the uplink and several endpoints are connected.
  2. Decide whether unmanaged is enough. The models below suit straightforward plug-and-play expansion. If you need VLANs or other configuration controls, check a managed switch’s feature list instead of assuming a low-cost unmanaged model provides them.
  3. Check the exact revision and local terms. Compare current seller prices, stock, return terms, warranty coverage, and hardware revision in your market. Manufacturer specifications alone do not establish which model is currently cheapest or available.
  4. Confirm the installation location. Check desktop or wall-mount options, cable clearance, power-adapter placement, and the operating environment specified for the exact model.

Fanless 2.5GbE switch comparison

Model 2.5GbE ports Management Fanless / form factor Other manufacturer-stated details
TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 5 Plug-and-play; listed features include 802.1p/DSCP QoS. The cited material does not establish VLAN management. Fanless; desktop or wall mounting. 25Gbps switching capacity and 18.6 Mpps forwarding rate; manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Current US page lists 12.11W maximum consumption and a 12V/1A adapter; a separate 2025 hardware version 3.0 datasheet lists a 9V/0.6A adapter, so verify the unit’s revision and supplied adapter. TP-Link product page; TP-Link datasheet and downloads.
QNAP QSW-1105-5T 5 Unmanaged. Fanless; desktop form factor. 25Gbps switching capacity and 12W maximum consumption, per QNAP hardware specification. QNAP marks the product “Legacy”; its specification lists a two-year warranty, whose regional applicability should be confirmed. QNAP hardware specifications; QNAP product features.

Which model fits your setup?

Choose the TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 for a five-port desktop or wall-mounted setup

TP-Link specifies five RJ45 ports that auto-negotiate at 100Mbps, 1Gbps, or 2.5Gbps. Its product page also lists 25Gbps switching capacity, 18.6 Mpps packet forwarding, and 802.1p/DSCP QoS. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not evidence of independent throughput testing. TP-Link lists an operating temperature range of 0–40°C, so check that the intended location fits its stated conditions. TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 specifications

Power details differ across the cited materials: the US product page lists 12.11W maximum consumption and a 12V/1A adapter, while TP-Link’s 2025 datasheet for hardware version 3.0 lists a 9V/0.6A adapter. Do not assume those figures describe every regional unit; check the label and adapter supplied with the specific switch. TP-Link datasheet and downloads

Consider QNAP QSW-1105-5T only after checking its legacy status

QNAP specifies five 2.5GbE RJ45 ports, unmanaged operation, fanless design, desktop form factor, 25Gbps switching capacity, and 12W maximum consumption. Its page labels the product “Legacy,” so check current availability and support status rather than treating it as a default current option. QNAP describes plug-and-play setup and network loop detection and blocking; those features do not make the switch managed. The hardware specification lists a two-year warranty, but confirm applicable terms in your region. QNAP hardware specifications; QNAP product features

Pick TRENDnet TEG-S380 V2 when five ports are not enough

TRENDnet describes the V2 as an eight-port, unmanaged 2.5G switch with a fanless design. Its support page calls the model non-manageable. The product page advertises a lifetime warranty subject to terms; confirm the applicable wording, regional coverage, and exact version with the seller or manufacturer. Will your devices and cabling run at 2.5Gbps?

A switch’s 2.5GbE ports do not force every connection to run at 2.5Gbps. The endpoint needs a 2.5GbE-capable network interface, and the link rate depends on the connected device, cable, and installation conditions. TP-Link lists 100Mbps, 1Gbps, and 2.5Gbps auto-negotiation for the TL-SG105-M2. If a device has only a 1Gbps interface, its link will not become 2.5Gbps just because it is connected to this switch. TP-Link says the cited switch can use regular Cat5e cable, so a Cat6 recable is not automatically required. However, TP-Link also cautions that actual speeds vary with cable quality and type, client limitations, and the environment. Check the negotiated link rate after installation rather than relying on the cable category printed on its jacket. TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 specifications; TP-Link regional compatibility guidance

What switching capacity does—and does not—tell you

TP-Link and QNAP each list 25Gbps switching capacity for their five-port models. That is an aggregate switch specification, not a promise that one client connection will operate at 25Gbps; each port’s negotiated link rate and the connected devices still matter. The cited product specifications do not provide independent performance tests under load. TP-Link specifications; QNAP hardware specifications

What “fanless” means when choosing a switch

TP-Link, QNAP, and TRENDnet describe the listed models as fanless. That identifies a design without an internal fan; it is not an independent noise measurement or a measured decibel rating. Consider the switch’s placement, its power adapter, and cable routing as well as the fanless specification when choosing where it will sit. TP-Link product page; QNAP hardware specifications; TRENDnet product page

Check the negotiated link after installation

  1. Connect the switch to the network and attach a 2.5GbE-capable endpoint using a suitable cable.
  2. Check the link speed shown by the endpoint’s operating system, network adapter utility, or device interface.
  3. If the link is below 2.5Gbps, confirm that both ports support 2.5GbE, check cable condition and type, and consult the devices’ specifications. A 100Mbps or 1Gbps negotiated link is supported by the TP-Link model, so a lower rate may reflect endpoint capability or the connection rather than a switch fault.

When an eight-port model makes more sense

If the router connection plus wired devices would fill five ports, an eight-port switch gives room for additional endpoints. TRENDnet’s TEG-S380 V2 is one eight-port example in this comparison. TP-Link’s TL-SG105-M2 page also presents the TL-SG108-M2 as an eight-port sibling; verify that exact model’s local specifications and current price before comparing it with the V2.
