None of the three is established as a therapist, diagnostic tool, or crisis service. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini may help with low-risk information seeking or organizing thoughts, but their published guidance does not show which is safest, most accurate, or most effective for mental-health questions. Use an AI response as a starting point—not a substitute for qualified care.
Can I ask an AI assistant about my mental health?
You can ask general questions, such as what a term means or how to organize concerns before speaking with a clinician. Treat answers cautiously: provider safety statements describe intended behavior, not proof that every response is safe or accurate. These sources do not establish any of the three assistants as clinically validated for mental-health support.
If you feel in immediate danger, need urgent medical care, or cannot stay safe, contact local emergency services or a crisis service rather than continuing a chatbot conversation.

| ChatGPT | OpenAI says its separate ChatGPT Health feature is designed to support, not replace, medical care and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment. Availability is limited to eligible users and may roll out gradually. These statements apply to Health, not automatically to every ChatGPT interaction. OpenAI Health information | OpenAI describes crisis-resource access. Its guidance says U.S. users can call or text 988; outside the U.S., it points users to local directories. It distinguishes crisis lines from ongoing therapy and directs medical emergencies to emergency services or an emergency room. OpenAI crisis helpline guidance | The separate Health Privacy Notice says covered Health conversations, medical records, and connected health data are not used to improve foundational models by default. Ordinary ChatGPT conversations follow standard model-training settings. OpenAI Health Privacy Notice |
| Claude | Anthropic says Claude should respond with empathy, be honest about its limitations as AI, and consider users’ wellbeing. Anthropic’s wellbeing safeguards | Anthropic describes directing people to helplines, mental-health professionals, or trusted people. | A directly comparable, current mental-health-data privacy statement was not established in the provider material cited here. |
| Gemini | Google warns that Gemini responses can be inaccurate, offensive, or inappropriate, and its policy guidelines restrict self-harm instructions and harmful health misinformation. Gemini response limitations and Gemini safety guidelines | The reviewed Google policy material addresses prohibited harmful outputs, but does not establish a comparably detailed crisis-referral feature. | A directly comparable, current mental-health-data privacy statement was not established in the provider material cited here. |

#1 Best Overall
Is Claude or Gemini better than ChatGPT for mental-health questions?
The available sources do not support an overall winner. They describe different product boundaries and safety intentions, but do not compare the assistants using the same prompts, current consumer versions, or independent clinical criteria. No current, independent head-to-head statistic on their mental-health response quality or safety is established here.
A meaningful comparison would need to test current versions across low-risk, ambiguous, and crisis scenarios using independently designed safety criteria. Without that evidence, a ranking would overstate what is known.

How to use an AI answer cautiously
- Use it to define a term, organize thoughts, or draft questions to discuss with a clinician—not to diagnose yourself or decide on treatment.
- Check important health claims with a qualified professional and reliable sources.
- Do not rely on a chatbot for urgent support or when you may be unable to stay safe.
- Review the privacy notice and controls for the exact service and feature you use; avoid sharing identifying details unless necessary.
What to do in a mental-health crisis
If you are in the United States, OpenAI’s help guidance says you can call or text 988. Outside the U.S., use a trusted local directory to find an appropriate crisis service. Crisis lines are for emotional or mental-health emergencies, not ongoing therapy. If you need immediate medical attention, contact emergency services or go to an emergency room. Crisis lines are independent of OpenAI.

What the providers’ statements do—and don’t—show
OpenAI states: “Health is designed to support, not replace, medical care and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.” That statement applies to ChatGPT Health. Anthropic says its Safeguards team works to ensure Claude handles these conversations “responding with empathy, being honest about its limitations as an AI, and being considerate of our users’ wellbeing.” Google cautions: “Gemini Apps are continuously evolving and may sometimes produce inaccurate, offensive, or inappropriate information that doesn’t represent Google’s views.” Each is a provider’s description of its product or policy, not independent proof of effectiveness.

Anthropic’s 2025 company-reported analysis said 2.9% of Claude.ai interactions were affective conversations and that fewer than 10% of coaching or counseling conversations involved Claude resisting a user request. Those usage findings are not clinical measures or a safety benchmark, and they do not compare Claude with ChatGPT or Gemini. Anthropic’s report
