If ChatGPT is not working, first check OpenAI’s live Status page for an incident affecting ChatGPT or sign-in. If there is no matching incident, the cause may be your sign-in method, browser, network, or account. Work through the checks below in order; they help narrow down the problem but do not prove its cause on their own.
Is ChatGPT down today?
Check status.openai.com before changing account settings or repeatedly trying to sign in. OpenAI’s login and error guidance points users to this page for known service incidents. Look for an active issue that matches what is failing, such as ChatGPT access or authentication. Status can change, so check it when the problem occurs rather than relying on old reports or posts.
If the Status page reports a matching incident, local browser fixes may not restore access until OpenAI resolves it. If it does not, continue with the checks below.
Why is ChatGPT not working?
“Not working” can mean different things: a service incident, a browser or network problem, or an account-specific sign-in issue. Compare where the problem occurs to narrow it down:

- One account or sign-in option: Check that you are using the method used to register.
- One browser or device: Test a private window, another browser, or another device.
- Only one network: Try a different network, such as cellular data. A problem limited to a work network may warrant an IT check.
- Several people or devices at once: Recheck OpenAI Status for a matching incident.
These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause.
Fix ChatGPT login and sign-up problems
Use the original sign-in method
Choose the same option you used when you first registered: email and password, Google, Microsoft, or Apple. These options may not be interchangeable for an existing account. OpenAI explains that a “There is already a user with email…” or “Wrong authentication method” message can appear when you try a different method from the one used at registration.

If you used Apple’s Hide My Email feature, the account may be associated with an Apple private relay address. Try continuing with the same Apple account rather than creating another account with your visible email address.

For “This user already exists,” try logging in
This message during sign-up can mean that registration was started previously but not completed. Instead of repeating registration, try logging in with the original sign-up method. If you received a welcome email but no verification email, OpenAI’s login guidance also suggests starting the login flow with that original method.

For a “Checking your browser…” loop
A Cloudflare browser check can fail when a VPN, proxy, or browser setting blocks the challenge. Try these steps:
- Turn off VPN or proxy services temporarily.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, and script blockers.
- Allow cookies, including third-party cookies, and JavaScript for
chatgpt.com,openai.com, andauth.openai.com. - Retry in a private window or a clean browser profile.
- Switch to another network.
If you are using a managed work or school network, its filtering may block the Cloudflare challenge; ask the network administrator to check access.

For “suspicious login behavior”
Clear the browser’s cache and cookies, turn off a VPN temporarily, and try a different network. Repeated failed attempts can trigger a temporary restriction, so OpenAI recommends waiting up to one hour before trying again.

For “Something went wrong,” “Oops,” or other login errors
- Wait at least 60 seconds, then retry.
- Check OpenAI Status for a matching incident.
- If there is no matching incident, clear browser cache and cookies and retry in a private window.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions, especially privacy or security tools.
- Try another browser or device, then another network.
When browser or network troubleshooting helps
If ChatGPT loads but a conversation or feature fails, refresh the page or start a new chat. OpenAI’s general error guidance also recommends disabling privacy or security extensions and VPN or secure DNS tools temporarily, then switching networks if needed.

Network or WebSocket errors can indicate that the device cannot establish a reliable connection. OpenAI’s workplace network guidance notes that some ChatGPT features use secure WebSocket connections over TCP port 443. If the issue affects a company network but disappears on cellular data, ask IT to review filtering, proxy settings, domain allowlisting, and WebSocket traffic. That difference points to a network worth investigating; it does not identify the exact cause by itself.
When you need OpenAI Support
Account access or suspension
If you believe your account was deactivated or suspended by mistake, check the email associated with the account for a notice and contact OpenAI Support. If you no longer have access to the inbox tied to the account, OpenAI says self-service steps cannot restore email-based login or verification, and SMS is not an alternative. If you have a subscription, Support can help with cancellation assistance.
Contact Support with useful details
Open the chat bubble at help.openai.com to contact OpenAI Support. Include the account email, the sign-in method you use, what happened, the steps that reproduce the problem, and when it occurred, including your time zone. Add your browser, device, operating system, network details, and relevant screenshots.
A HAR recording may help diagnose an interface issue, but it can contain sensitive information. Review and sanitize it before sharing it with Support.
