ChatGPT Memory can personalize replies using saved memories and, when enabled, relevant information from past chats and other available sources. To review or change it, open Settings > Personalization > Memory if those controls are available on your account. Memory is separate from chat history and from the model-training setting, so turning it off does not delete your chats.
How ChatGPT Memory works
Memory gives ChatGPT context that can help tailor future responses. Depending on your plan, region, platform, and workspace, it may draw on saved memories, past chats, custom instructions, files in Library, and connected-app content such as Gmail. OpenAI says, “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” It is not a complete transcript or a guarantee that ChatGPT will recall every detail.
OpenAI describes Memory as selecting relevant information and updating what seems useful as context changes. Its June 4, 2026 announcement described an improved memory architecture built on “dreaming,” a background synthesis process. That announcement said the rollout was beginning with Plus and Pro users in the US, with other countries and Free and Go users to follow over the coming weeks. It does not establish that every account now has the same controls or experience.
Saved memories
Saved memories are selected details that ChatGPT can carry into future conversations. You can ask ChatGPT to remember something, and it may also save useful context when that behavior is available. Saved memories are separate from the chat where the information first appeared: deleting that chat alone does not necessarily remove the saved memory.

Reference chat history
When Reference chat history is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant information from earlier conversations. It does not retain every detail this way, and the information it uses can change over time. OpenAI says there is no separate storage limit for what ChatGPT can reference through chat history; that is not a promise that every past detail will be recalled.
How to review, correct, or remove memories
Start at Settings > Personalization > Memory. Labels and available controls vary. You may see options such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. If a control is missing, check the account you are using and ask your workspace administrator whether the workspace makes it available.

Review or correct remembered information
- Ask ChatGPT what it remembers about you, then correct inaccurate details in the conversation.
- Review the Memory summary or saved-memory controls, and edit or delete an item if the option appears.
- Use available sources or personalization details to understand why a response may have been tailored. OpenAI cautions that displayed sources might not show every factor that influenced a response.
- You can ask ChatGPT not to mention a detail again. That changes personalization behavior; it does not delete the underlying chat, file, email, or other source.
Remove a detail from its sources
For a more complete removal, check each place the information may remain. Deleting only one source may leave another copy or a separate memory.
- Delete the item from the Memory summary or saved-memory controls, if available.
- Delete the chat where the information was shared or referenced if you also want the original conversation removed.
- Remove relevant files from Library or disconnect the connected app if you no longer want that source available.
- Check regular and archived chats and other sources where the information may still exist.
OpenAI says updates and deletions can take time to propagate. Logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging; this is not a blanket guarantee about deletion of every copy in every system.

What happens when you turn Memory off?
Turning off Memory does not delete your past chats. It also does not, by itself, remove saved memories. Manage or delete saved memories separately if you want them removed.
Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately. Where the controls are offered together, turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history. Because interface variants differ, check the wording and effects shown in your own settings.

Memory, Temporary Chat, and model training are different controls

Use Temporary Chat for a conversation without Memory
Choose Temporary Chat when you want a conversation that does not use or update Memory for personalization. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history and are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary. This is not a way to erase existing memories or prior conversations.

Change the model-training preference separately
For personal accounts, OpenAI’s Data Controls guidance says you can turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings > Data Controls. Conversations remain in history but are not used to train ChatGPT. OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default.

OpenAI also says turning off Memory or personalization does not disable limited safety and security uses of context in rare, high-risk situations.
Why your controls may look different
Memory availability and labels can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. OpenAI’s June 4, 2026 rollout announcement described an initial US rollout to Plus and Pro users, followed by plans to expand over the coming weeks; it is not a guarantee about any individual account today. Check your own settings for the controls currently available, and ask a workspace administrator if an option is unavailable.
