If ChatGPT for Windows setup ends with helper_failed, setup did not complete—but OpenAI’s reviewed guidance does not identify a specific cause or prescribe an error-specific repair. The elevated Windows sandbox requires administrator approval. If you cannot get that approval, choose Continue with limited access when offered; the app can still be used with reduced sandbox capabilities, but setup remains incomplete.
Why does ChatGPT Windows setup say “helper_failed”?
The message means the setup helper failed, but it does not establish why. OpenAI’s deployment instructions explain the administrator-approval requirement for the elevated Windows sandbox, but do not define helper_failed or give a targeted fix. Reports describe the error both before a UAC prompt appears and after a user approves one, so the message alone cannot identify a single cause.
Do not confuse it with Windows error 0x80073D28. OpenAI’s deployment guide describes that separate error as a packaged service that cannot be installed without administrator privileges; it is not a definition of helper_failed. What should you do if ChatGPT needs administrator approval?
If you have permission to install software on this PC, ask your administrator to approve the setup when Windows displays the User Account Control (UAC) prompt. OpenAI Support states that administrator approval is required for the elevated sandbox. If approval is unavailable, select Continue with limited access if the option appears. That permits use with reduced sandbox capabilities; it does not finish setup or repair the failure. OpenAI Support’s September 27, 2026 response describes this fallback.

What to check based on when the error appeared
No UAC prompt appeared
One public report describes helper_failed appearing immediately, without a UAC prompt. Retrying and launching the app as administrator did not resolve that reporter’s case. This is an individual report, not evidence of a general cause or a recommended fix. If you can proceed with limited access, you can use that option while leaving setup incomplete. The report describes the sequence and outcome.
You approved the UAC prompt, then saw the error
A separate report describes the error after UAC approval on Windows 11 Pro 25H2, OS build 26200.9445, with ChatGPT app version 26.908.40834. The user said diagnostic logs were submitted, but the report does not document a resolution. Those version details describe that report only; they do not show that those versions cause the error. Read the reported UAC sequence.

The PC is managed by your organization
Ask your IT administrator to check how the app is being deployed and which account or device context is used for installation. OpenAI documents managed deployment through Intune, offline MSIX, SCCM, and other management tools. For an Intune Store app deployment, the guide says to review Install behavior and choose System where applicable; it also covers assignment and device synchronization. For offline MSIX deployment, it documents device context, and it includes SCCM provisioning guidance. These are documented deployment procedures, not confirmed repairs for helper_failed.

- The deployment method, such as self-install, Intune, offline MSIX, or SCCM.
- Your Windows version and build, and the ChatGPT app version.
- Whether a UAC prompt appeared and what happened after you approved or dismissed it.
- Relevant sandbox logs.

OpenAI’s general Windows app help page documents resetting the app through Settings → Apps → Installed Apps → ChatGPT → Advanced Options → Reset, but it does not say that this repairs sandbox setup or helper_failed. Treat Reset as a general app troubleshooting option, not a confirmed remedy for this setup error. The same help page lists Windows 10 x64 or Arm64, version 17763.0 or higher, as a system requirement; consult the current Windows app help page for the latest requirements.
