ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps had generated an estimated $2 billion in global consumer spending by August 2025, according to Appfigures figures reported by TechCrunch. The same estimate works out to $2.91 per download over the apps’ lifetime. These are mobile app-store estimates—not audited OpenAI financial results, a fee for installing the app, or a measure of all ChatGPT revenue.

How much money has ChatGPT made from its app?

Appfigures estimated that consumers had spent $2 billion globally through ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps since their launch in May 2023. TechCrunch reported the estimate on August 15, 2025. It describes cumulative mobile app-store spending through that report’s cutoff, not a figure for a single year. TechCrunch’s report of the Appfigures estimate does not provide enough methodology to reproduce the calculation independently, so it should be treated as a third-party estimate rather than an audited or company-reported total.

The same Appfigures estimates show how sharply app spending accelerated in 2025:

Measure Appfigures estimate reported by TechCrunch
Global spending, January–July 2025 $1.35 billion, up 673% from $174 million in January–July 2024
Average monthly spending, January–July 2025 About $193 million, compared with about $25 million per month in the corresponding 2024 period
Estimated lifetime installs at the time of the August 2025 report 690 million globally; average downloads were about 45 million a month

These figures refer to different periods and measures: the $2 billion is cumulative spending since launch, while $1.35 billion covers January through July 2025 alone. The reported installs and monthly downloads are also estimates, not user counts.

What does $2.91 per install mean?

The $2.91 figure is estimated lifetime app-store consumer spending divided by downloads. It is an aggregate ratio, not the cost of installing ChatGPT and not the average bill paid by an individual user. Downloads include people who may never pay, people who pay through the app, and potentially repeat downloads; the numerator is estimated app-store spending. The ratio therefore cannot tell you what share of downloaders subscribed or how much a typical paying customer spent.

Country figures underline why a global average is not a prediction for each market. In Appfigures’ estimates reported by TechCrunch, U.S. spending was $10 per download, and the U.S. represented 38% of lifetime app spending. Germany represented 5.3% of lifetime spending. India contributed 13.7% of lifetime downloads, compared with 10.3% for the U.S. These are distinct country shares and per-download measures; they should not be read as comparable user-level spending amounts.

Does the $2 billion include ChatGPT subscriptions on the web?

No. The $2 billion estimate concerns consumer spending through the iOS and Android apps, not every way people and organizations pay for OpenAI services. Subscriptions purchased on the web, business plans, and API revenue are outside that mobile app-store total. TechCrunch explicitly notes that web subscriptions and other business channels are separate from app-store spending. See TechCrunch’s explanation of the estimate’s scope.

Is $2 billion ChatGPT’s total revenue?

No. It is an estimate of one channel: consumer spending through the mobile apps. It is not OpenAI’s total revenue, net income, or the amount OpenAI necessarily received after app-store fees and other deductions. The cited report does not establish net publisher receipts or give a complete accounting of OpenAI’s revenue.

How does ChatGPT compare with other AI apps?

Later reporting provides context, but it is not a direct revision of the Appfigures lifetime estimate. Sensor Tower reported that ChatGPT generated $3.4 billion in global in-app purchase revenue in calendar 2025 and ranked third among the highest-grossing apps, behind TikTok and Google One. That is a different analytics provider’s figure for a calendar year and a different stated metric; it should not be added to or substituted for the Appfigures estimate. Sensor Tower’s January 2026 State of Mobile release also includes its ranking statement: “ChatGPT was the third-highest grossing app of 2025 behind TikTok and Google One, signaling a decisive shift in both consumer spend and attention.”

Sensor Tower’s June 2026 release reported that ChatGPT mobile reached one billion monthly active users in May 2026. Monthly active users measure usage, not purchases or revenue. The same release projected more than $4 billion in global in-app purchase revenue for AI apps in the first half of 2026; that is a category-wide projection, not ChatGPT’s reported revenue. Sensor Tower also reported $167 billion in global app in-app purchases in 2025. Read Sensor Tower’s June 2026 State of AI release.

For any comparison, keep the distinctions visible: lifetime cumulative app spending is not calendar-year revenue; consumer spending is not net publisher receipts; spending per download is not paid conversion or average revenue per user; and mobile app purchases do not include web, enterprise, or API business by default. The cited estimates do not provide a consistent basis for comparing all of those measures across providers or markets.
