Charge your Samsung tablet until it reaches 100% before using it for the first time, then unplug it. Samsung’s general guidance does not specify a fixed number of hours or require an overnight first charge. The time varies with the tablet model, its starting battery level, the compatible charger and cable, and whether you use the tablet while it charges.
What Samsung recommends for a first charge
Samsung advises fully charging a Galaxy device before first use, but it does not give a universal first-charge duration. Its U.S. tablet setup instructions say to connect the USB-C cable to the charger, plug the charger into an outlet, and connect the other end to the tablet’s USB-C port. Use the correct charger and cable for your device.
In practical terms, wait for the battery indicator to show 100%, then disconnect the charger. Samsung’s battery-care guidance recommends unplugging the device once it is fully charged.

Do you need to charge it overnight?
No overnight ritual is stated in Samsung’s general first-use guidance. Charge the tablet until it reaches 100%; the actual time depends on the model and charging setup. There is no need to keep it plugged in for an invented extra number of hours after it is full.
What affects how long charging takes?
- Tablet model: Models differ in charging support, so the time for one Galaxy Tab cannot be assumed to apply to another.
- Starting battery level: A tablet with a lower battery level will generally need more charging than one that is already partly charged.
- Charger and cable: Use a compatible, undamaged charger and cable. Samsung UK recommends an authorized charger and cable compatible with the tablet; accessory compatibility can vary by model and market.
- Using the tablet while charging: Active use can affect how quickly the battery level rises.
The cited general Samsung pages do not publish a first-charge time in hours. For a model-specific estimate, check the manual or support information for your exact Galaxy Tab and charging equipment.

Use safe charging conditions
- Charge in a moderate-temperature environment. Samsung gives 32–95°F (0–35°C) as the optimal Galaxy usage temperature range and warns that charging in extreme temperatures may accelerate battery deterioration. This is a temperature range, not a charging-time estimate.
- Do not charge the tablet if there is moisture in its charging port. Samsung warns against inserting objects into the port. Most Samsung tablets are not water resistant; Samsung’s cited guidance identifies Galaxy Active tablets as the exception.

If the tablet seems to charge unusually slowly
- Check that the charger and cable are compatible with your specific Galaxy Tab, undamaged, and connected securely.
- Try a wall outlet rather than a notebook or PC to check whether the power source is the issue.
- If charging still does not work as expected, follow Samsung’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance or contact Samsung support. Do not insert an object into the port to clear debris.
