Character.AI’s Parental Insights lets a teen choose to share a weekly summary of their activity with a parent or guardian. It reports screentime and the Characters the teen interacted with—not chat messages—and it does not let the adult set screen-time limits through the connection.

What Character.AI Parental Insights shows

The weekly report summarizes the teen’s time on Character.AI and their engagement with Characters. The current Parental Insights page lists screentime, top Characters, time spent with each Character, and C.ai+ subscription status as report fields. Character.AI’s March 25, 2025 launch announcement said the time summary covered web and mobile and described the feature as an initial way to give parents information about time spent on the service.

The report does not include chat content. Character.AI’s current Help Center FAQ also says a connected adult cannot view messages, in-app content, or other activity through the Family Connect dashboard. This is an activity summary, not access to the teen’s conversations.

How a teen connects a parent or guardian

The teen initiates the connection from Character.AI. The adult must accept an emailed invitation and complete adult verification before the link is finalized.

  1. Open Preferences and go to the Parental Insights tab.
  2. Add a parent or guardian by entering their email address. The current feature page says a teen can add multiple adults.
  3. The adult opens the emailed invitation, accepts it, and completes the required verification.
  4. Once the connection is complete, the adult can view screentime through the Family Connect dashboard and receives a weekly activity report.

The connection is optional. A pending invitation expires and is deleted after 14 days, according to Character.AI’s Help Center FAQ, updated August 6, 2026.

Can a parent turn off or limit Character.AI screen time?

Not through Parental Insights. The connection lets a parent view the reported activity; it does not provide a control to set screentime limits. Character.AI’s FAQ says either side can disconnect after linking. A teen can also request removal of a connected email address; the adult is notified and must confirm the request. Previously recorded screentime history remains after disconnection.

Families seeking limits or blocking need to consider controls outside this connection. Parental Insights should not be treated as a substitute for device-level family controls.

How the feature fits Character.AI’s changing teen experience

Character.AI introduced Parental Insights on March 25, 2025, calling it “the first step in providing parents with information about the time their teen spends on Character.AI.” The teen-oriented product has since changed. On October 29, 2025, the company announced that it would remove open-ended AI chat for users under 18 no later than November 25, 2025. It also described a two-hour-per-day limit as a transition measure before that removal and announced age-assurance technology combining an in-house model with third-party tools, including Persona.

In a September 3, 2026 safety update, Character.AI said it had improved Parental Insights through a partnership with k-ID, describing visibility into teen activity and a weekly email update. That update also named ThroughLine as a partner providing a global directory that points users to crisis and mental-health resources in their country. These announcements describe broader safety and product changes; they do not mean the parental connection can read chats or impose limits.

What parents should understand before relying on it

  • It is opt-in and teen-initiated: the teen enters the adult’s email, and the adult accepts and verifies the connection.
  • It reports a narrow set of activity: screentime and Character engagement are visible; message content and other in-app activity are not.
  • It is not a limit-setting tool: a connected parent cannot use the feature to impose screentime limits.
  • Disconnecting does not erase history: Character.AI says previously recorded screentime remains after either side disconnects.

Character.AI’s official materials do not publish adoption, effectiveness, or harm-reduction figures for Parental Insights. The feature is best understood as a voluntary visibility tool, not evidence that a teen’s use is being restricted or that risks are being prevented.
