Yes. Character.AI provides an official data-export request on both its website and mobile app. The current Help Center estimate is three to four weeks for processing, followed by an email containing a download link that expires seven days after it is sent. Request the export early, watch the email address attached to your account (including spam), download the archive immediately, and keep two copies in different places.
Character.AI also says chats from the retired beta site were preserved and migrated, although its current documentation does not list every file, field, memory, persona, or metadata item in a modern export. If you cannot sign in, use the official Account Issues support area before attempting an export. Character.AI announced a voluntary Chapter 11 process on October 12, 2026, while saying the service remained available and exports could still be requested; that makes a prompt backup sensible for anyone with important conversations.
What you can back up from Character.AI
The supported method is an account-level export request. It is not an instant “download this one conversation” button: Character.AI processes the request and later sends a link to the email address associated with the account.
The company has not published a complete contents list for the current archive in the documentation reviewed for this guide. Therefore, do not assume that every chat variant, saved memory, persona, profile setting, attachment, or piece of metadata will appear. Treat the archive as the authoritative result of your request, and separately preserve anything that is especially valuable or irreplaceable.

- Keep access to the account email for several weeks.
- Download as soon as the completion email arrives.
- Make a second copy in a different location.
- Open the downloaded files and check that the material you expected is present.
How to request an export
On the Character.AI website
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Choose Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export data and submit the request.
These are the labels in Character.AI’s Help Center guidance. If the interface has been rearranged, look for the same account-data or privacy area rather than submitting credentials through an unrelated third-party form.
In the mobile app
- Open the app and go to Profile.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Export my data.
- Confirm the request if the app asks you to do so.
Use the app route if the web menu is unavailable, and the web route if the app cannot be updated or opened. A request made from one surface is still associated with the same Character.AI account; it does not create a separate mobile-only archive.
How long the export takes and what to do with the email
Character.AI’s newer download guidance says, “Your export may take 3-4 weeks to complete.” That is an estimate, not a guaranteed maximum. Plan on waiting several weeks rather than expecting a same-day download.

When processing finishes, Character.AI emails a download link to the address associated with the account. The Help Center says the link is valid for seven days from the time the email is sent. The seven-day period is not seven days after you first open the message, so do not leave the email for later.

Use this delivery checklist
- Confirm which email address is listed on the account before requesting the export.
- Check that mailbox regularly during the three-to-four-week estimate.
- Inspect spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine folders.
- Add Character.AI’s legitimate mail domain to your safe-sender list if your provider filters automated messages.
- When the message arrives, follow the link and save the complete archive locally.
- Record the download date and the account to which the archive belongs.
If the link has expired, do not rely on an old copy of the message. Sign in and look for a way to submit a new export request; if you cannot access the account or email, use Account Issues support.
How to make a durable two-copy backup
A single downloaded file is not a resilient backup. Drive failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, a lost phone, or loss of access to a cloud account can eliminate one copy. Keep the original download unchanged and create at least one additional copy in a separate location.

For sensitive conversations, protect the archive with your operating system’s full-disk encryption or an encrypted container before placing it on removable or cloud storage. Use a unique password and store the recovery key separately. Do not email the archive to yourself as the only backup: inbox search is convenient, but account takeover or mailbox deletion can remove the copy.
A practical copy workflow
- Download the archive to a computer using the completion email.
- Do not rename files in a way that obscures the account or date; add a date to the containing folder if useful.
- Copy the unchanged archive to a USB flash drive and eject the drive safely.
- Copy it to a reputable cloud-storage account protected by a strong password and multi-factor authentication.
- Open the USB or cloud copy and confirm that it has the same file size as the original.
- Store the USB drive somewhere physically separate from the computer.
Two copies on the same laptop are not meaningfully redundant. The goal is separate failure domains: for example, a local computer plus a disconnected USB drive, or a local computer plus encrypted cloud storage.

How to check the archive after downloading
Character.AI does not promise a particular archive layout in the available Help Center material, so verification should focus on whether the download completed and whether the expected content is readable.
- Check that the download finished without a browser error or partial-file suffix.
- Record the archive’s file size and, if your operating system offers it, calculate a checksum so later copies can be compared.
- Extract a working copy rather than editing the original archive.
- Look for readable chat or account-data files and search for a few distinctive character or conversation names.
- Compare the oldest and newest material you know should exist, while remembering that the documentation does not guarantee every historical variant, memory, persona, or metadata field.
- If the archive appears incomplete or corrupt, preserve the original file, capture the error message, and contact Account Issues support with the account email and request details.
What to do if you cannot log in
The official Account Issues category is the starting point for login problems, locked-account recovery, password resets, profile management, and missing verification emails. An export request normally requires account access, so solve the sign-in or mailbox problem first.
When the password is rejected
- Use the account’s password-reset flow and check every folder in the associated email account.
- Complete the reset from a current, trusted browser rather than a link forwarded by someone else.
- After signing in, verify the account email before requesting export.
When verification mail never arrives
- Confirm that the address was entered correctly and that the mailbox has available space.
- Search for Character.AI mail by sender and check spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine.
- Ask a workplace or school mail administrator whether automated messages are being blocked.
- Use Account Issues support if the message still does not appear.
When the account is locked or the old email is inaccessible
Do not create a replacement account and assume it will contain the old chats. Provide support with the details it requests for account recovery, explain that you need an export, and keep any evidence of ownership or prior account communication. Support may need to restore access before an export can be delivered.

Character.AI’s September 24, 2024 retirement notice said recent chats were available on the new site or mobile app. For chats older than six months, it described a manual Migrate chats or Migrate chat now path and stated: “All chats will be preserved and migrated.”

The old website itself was no longer accessible. The migration directions are therefore historical guidance: labels and placement may have changed, and the current archive documentation does not itemize exactly how migrated conversations are represented.
If you still see a migration prompt
- Sign in to the same account used on the beta site.
- Open the migration prompt or the account area containing Migrate chats.
- Choose Migrate chat now when offered.
- Allow the process to finish before closing the app or browser.
- After migration, search for several old character names and dates.
- Request an account export separately; migration and export are different operations.
If an expected conversation is missing, note its approximate date, character, and any visible migration message when contacting Account Issues support. Avoid claiming that a missing item proves permanent deletion: the published notice promised preservation and migration, but the current archive’s field-by-field contents are not documented.

Why exporting matters during the October 2026 business update
In an October 12, 2026 company update, Character.AI said it had initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 process to pursue a court-supervised sale. The same update said the platform remained up and running, subscriptions were active for the time being, and users could delete accounts or export data through the app or website. The company stated: “The Character.ai platform remains up and running, and you can continue to access all services at this time.”
Chapter 11 does not by itself mean that chats disappear, and the update does not provide a timetable for service changes. It does mean that availability, support response times, account features, or data-access procedures could change during a court-supervised sale. If your conversations matter, submit the export while the documented routes still work rather than waiting for a deadline that has not been announced.
Troubleshooting: choose the branch that matches your problem

One-page backup checklist
- Sign in and confirm the account email.
- Request export from Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data, or from Profile → Settings → Export my data in the app.
- Calendar a reminder to monitor the mailbox for three to four weeks.
- Download within seven days of the completion email.
- Keep the untouched original archive.
- Make one offline copy and one separately secured cloud or other-location copy.
- Open a working copy and search for representative conversations.
- Use Account Issues for login, locked-account, reset, verification-email, expired-link, or archive problems.
- Complete any available beta-chat migration before evaluating whether older conversations are present.
- Review Model Improvement settings separately from the backup process.
The Bottom Line
Request the Character.AI export now, plan for a three-to-four-week wait, download it within the seven-day link window, and keep two independently stored copies. Use Account Issues for access problems, treat beta-chat migration as a separate historical process, and do not assume undocumented memories or metadata are included in the archive.
