Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited reported £21 million in operating profit for the year ended 31 December 2024, down from £112.4 million in 2023. But the earlier figure included an £80.9 million payment from Sky Media after an advertising-sales underpayment, making the year-on-year drop look sharper than a comparison of ordinary trading alone would suggest. Channel 5 also spent £216.6 million on content in 2024, which Deadline described as a three-year high. The figures show continued content investment alongside lower reported operating profit; they do not establish that streaming investment caused the decline.
What the profit figures show
The figures refer to Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited, the UK company behind the broadcaster branded as 5. Deadline reported that its operating profit was £21 million in 2024, compared with £112.4 million in 2023—an 81% decline. These are operating-profit figures, not pre-tax profit.

The comparison has an important qualification: the 2023 figure included an £80.9 million payment from Sky Media following an advertising-sales underpayment, according to Deadline. That exceptional payment lifted the prior-year result. The reported fall therefore should not be read as a direct measure of how much Channel 5’s ordinary operations weakened.
City A.M. separately reported £30.6 million in pre-tax profit for 2024. Pre-tax profit and operating profit are different accounting measures, so the £30.6 million figure does not replace or contradict the £21 million operating-profit figure.

Content spending remained high
Channel 5’s reported content spend was £216.6 million in 2024. Deadline described this as a three-year high. That points to continued spending on programming even as operating profit fell, but the available figures do not show how much of the content budget was specifically for streaming, or how that spending affected profit.
What is known about streaming
In 2026, Paramount described 5 as the fastest-growing UK public service broadcaster streaming service for the second consecutive year, referring to growth in 2025. That is the company’s characterization of its service’s growth, not an independently verified ranking in the material available here.

The growth claim and the 2024 financial results concern different periods and different things: one is a company-reported streaming-growth description for 2025; the other is a reported profit figure for 2024. Neither, by itself, establishes that streaming investment caused the profit decline.

In the Companies House record retrieved on 9 October 2026, those were still listed as the latest accounts, and the 2025 accounts were overdue. The figures in this article therefore describe 2024, not the company’s latest trading performance.
