No: Sony’s cited US rules and support guidance do not identify an ordinary DNS change as a reason for a PSN ban. Sony even lists temporarily changing DNS as a possible troubleshooting step for a PS5 connection error. That is reassuring, but it is not a blanket guarantee for every network setup or an exemption from PlayStation’s Terms.
Why changing DNS is not the same as violating PSN rules
DNS, or the Domain Name System, translates domain names into IP addresses. Changing the DNS server changes how your console looks up those addresses; it does not, by itself, change your account’s standing under PlayStation’s Terms.
Sony’s current US Terms allow SIE to restrict, suspend, or terminate an account or device for an agreement violation, a reasonable belief that a violation has or will occur, or a reasonable protective need. The cited Terms do not name a routine DNS server change as a suspension ground. They also make internet connectivity’s provision, quality, and security the responsibility of the third-party internet provider. Read the US PlayStation Network Terms of Service.

This means the careful answer is that ordinary DNS changes alone are not documented as a ban trigger—not that every possible network configuration is guaranteed to comply with every rule. Check the current Terms for your account region.

Sony lists temporary DNS changes as a connection troubleshooting step
For PS5 error code NW-102650-4, Sony says the connection issue “could be improved by changing DNS settings temporarily.” That is direct evidence that DNS changes can be a normal troubleshooting option, not an automatic violation. Sony presents it as a possible step, not a guaranteed fix; it does not promise lower gaming latency, restored service, or any effect on enforcement. DNS is one part of a console’s network configuration. PlayStation’s setup guide includes DNS among the advanced network settings for PS5 and custom settings for PS4. It advises users unfamiliar with those settings to ask their internet service provider or network administrator for help. View PlayStation’s console internet setup guide.

A connection error does not prove your account is suspended
A network error and a suspension are different problems. Sony says a suspension produces an error when you try to sign in. Its suspension guidance distinguishes account, communication, and console suspensions; suspensions may be temporary or permanent, with type and duration depending on the severity of the violation and offense history. Check Sony’s suspension information and use its account-status guidance if you cannot sign in.

What to do if you changed DNS to fix a connection problem
- If the connection works: You can continue using the setting. The cited Sony guidance does not treat a routine DNS change as a suspension reason.
- If the error remains: Follow Sony’s troubleshooting steps for the specific error rather than assuming DNS will fix it. The NW-102650-4 guidance describes a temporary DNS change only as a possible improvement.
- If you are unsure about the settings: Consult your ISP or network administrator, as PlayStation recommends for users unfamiliar with advanced network configuration.
- If you see a suspension notice: Check the stated account or console status and use Sony’s support process; do not treat DNS changes as a remedy.
What the available guidance does not establish
Sony’s cited materials do not quantify how often DNS changes lead to bans, endorse every third-party DNS provider, or say that DNS can hide a player’s identity or location or bypass enforcement. They support a narrower conclusion: a routine DNS change is a configurable network setting and is not listed in the cited US enforcement terms as a suspension ground.
