The CF210SP is a solder-it-yourself AM/FM radio kit, not a ready-to-use radio. Its instructions document FM tuning from about 76–108 MHz and AM from about 525–1605 kHz, with power from two AA batteries. Those figures describe the version covered by Universal Solder’s 2021 instructions; check the exact seller listing because kit contents and revisions may vary. The “$3” in the original title is historical context, not a current price.

What is the CF210SP radio kit?

It is a small electronics project built around a radio circuit board, components, speaker, antenna and enclosure. A 2021 AliExpress build account by Mirko Pavleski describes a kit that included a plastic case, small telescopic antenna, adhesive AM/FM scale, components, and a short Chinese-language guide containing a schematic and PCB layout. Universal Solder’s January 14, 2021 instructions also list the board, parts, enclosure, speaker and antenna. These are documented examples, not a guarantee that every listing includes the same items.

In Universal Solder’s instructions, the CD9088 handles FM, the CD7642 handles AM, and the TDA2822 is the audio amplifier. Treat those component identifications as specifications for the documented circuit, not proof that all seller revisions are identical.

What bands and power does the documented circuit use?

Item Documented detail
FM tuning range About 76–108 MHz, as specified in Universal Solder’s 2021 instructions.
AM tuning range About 525–1605 kHz, as specified in Universal Solder’s 2021 instructions.
Power 3 V from two AA batteries, according to Universal Solder’s 2021 instructions; that document says batteries are not included.
Audio and antenna The instructions describe a small speaker and headphone output. Pavleski’s 2021 build account lists a telescopic antenna; the instructions identify an internal rod antenna for AM reception.

The AM rod antenna is directional, so turning the radio can change reception. The tuning ranges are not a promise of reception at every location: signal availability and local conditions matter, and the cited documents do not establish sensitivity or reception distance.

What assembly involves

This is a soldering project that calls for basic soldering experience. Universal Solder’s 2021 instructions estimate about one hour, but actual time depends on experience, kit completeness and troubleshooting. Pavleski describes installing small components first, then resistors and capacitors, coils, ICs, switches, and finally the potentiometer and variable capacitor. Follow the guide supplied with the particular board, since layouts and parts can differ.

  1. Inventory the kit. Compare the parts against the seller’s listing and the supplied guide. Confirm the board, components, enclosure, speaker and antenna are present; do not assume batteries or tools are included.
  2. Read the schematic and layout before soldering. The paper guide documented by Universal Solder is in Chinese; that source provides English instructions as supplemental help. Check what language support the actual listing supplies.
  3. Solder carefully, following the board markings and instructions. Pavleski’s account recommends starting with small components and proceeding through the remaining parts, leaving the potentiometer and variable capacitor until later.
  4. Inspect the completed board before applying power. Pavleski advises checking for solder bridges or breaks. A basic soldering iron and solder are needed; Hackster’s project page lists a soldering iron and lead-free solder among the relevant tools and materials.
  5. Install the specified power source and test. The documented circuit uses two AA cells for 3 V. If the radio does not work, disconnect power and recheck component placement, solder joints and the board against its schematic before trying again.

What performance should you expect?

Pavleski reported that his completed radio received both FM and AM, while cautioning that he did not expect great quality. That is one builder’s subjective report, not a controlled test of all kits. Universal Solder’s instructions also warn that the small speaker and thin plastic enclosure limit output. The available accounts do not establish measured sensitivity, reception range, battery life, or comparative audio quality.

What to verify before ordering

  • Exact revision and contents: Check current photos and the parts list for the board, enclosure, speaker, antenna and any battery holder. The documented examples do not establish uniform contents across sellers.
  • Power requirements: Confirm whether the listing expects two AA batteries and whether the batteries or holder are included.
  • Assembly support: Look for a schematic, PCB layout and instructions in a language you can use. Do not assume the Chinese paper guide or supplemental English material is supplied with every listing.
  • Tools and skill: Plan to solder; a soldering iron and solder are not established as included kit contents.
  • Current price and seller details: The title’s $3 is not evidence of today’s price or availability. Check the live listing, shipping, seller and return terms rather than relying on old build accounts.
  • Expectations: Consider it a compact learning project, not a documented substitute for a commercial radio with specified performance.
