The Celestron NexStar 4SE is a compact, computerized Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope best suited to the Moon, planets, double stars, and brighter compact targets. Its GoTo mount can locate and track objects after alignment, but its 102 mm aperture and long 1325 mm focal length mean a narrow field of view—not an all-purpose wide-field scope. The main trade-off is convenience in finding targets versus limited aperture, framing, and portability.
What kind of telescope is the NexStar 4SE?
Celestron identifies the 4SE as model 11049. Its optical tube uses a Maksutov-Cassegrain design: light travels through a compact tube, while the 1325 mm focal length gives it a long effective reach relative to its 102 mm aperture. The resulting f/13 focal ratio favors higher-magnification views of smaller targets over expansive, low-magnification views.
The mount is a computerized, single-fork altitude-azimuth design. The included NexStar+ hand control provides access to 38,181 objects in Celestron’s listed database, with tracking rates for sidereal, solar, and lunar motion. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every object will be visible or easy to identify from every observing site. Celestron’s US product listing was checked on October 7, 2026.

What can you actually see through it?
The Moon and planets
The 4SE’s focal length and computerized tracking make lunar and planetary observing its clearest use case. Celestron cites lunar surface features, Saturn’s rings, and Jupiter’s cloud bands as examples. They are manufacturer examples, not guaranteed results: visibility and detail depend on atmospheric steadiness, target position, setup, and the observer’s expectations.
Double stars and brighter deep-sky objects
Double stars and brighter, compact objects are plausible targets for this aperture and narrow field. Celestron lists deep-sky examples for dark-sky viewing, but a four-inch telescope should not be expected to show every galaxy or nebula with striking detail. Fainter, larger objects are especially constrained by aperture and the narrow framing.

- FULLY AUTOMATED GoTo MOUNT WITH NEXSTAR+ HAND CONTROL: Use the NexStar+ hand control to select from a 40,000+ object database. The computerized mount then automatically slews to your target and tracks it—no star charts or manual alignment needed.
- FAST & EASY ALIGNMENT WITH SKYALIGN TECHNOLOGY: SkyAlign gets you observing fast—just center any three bright stars or planets, even if you don’t know their names. The system then calculates your position and aligns the mount in minutes.
- COMPATIBLE WITH CELESTRON ACCESSORIES: Easily upgrade your setup with all our latest accessories to enhance automation, wireless control, or location accuracy as your skills grow.
Space.com’s independent review also characterizes the field of view as limited. TelescopeSetup.com describes the instrument as oriented toward the Moon, planets, and double stars, while stating that its page was researched rather than tested in person. These perspectives support treating the 4SE as a focused observing instrument, not a wide-field substitute. Space.com’s review and TelescopeSetup.com’s overview provide those assessments.

The NexStar+ system can point the telescope toward selected objects and track them, but it needs an alignment procedure first. Celestron says SkyAlign uses three bright objects; it also lists one-star, two-star, auto two-star, solar-system, and equatorial alignment procedures. The equatorial option requires a wedge. Alignment depends on following the procedure and supplying suitable reference objects; GoTo does not mean automatic setup or perfect pointing.

- ADVANCED TECH MEETS ICONIC DESIGN: The NexStar 8SE pairs Celestron’s legendary orange tube with a fully computerized GoTo system—ideal for those ready to step up from manual scopes and explore more of the night sky with precision and ease.
- 8-INCH SCHMIDT-CASSEGRAIN OPTICS: The large 8" aperture gathers enough light to reveal fine lunar details, cloud bands on Jupiter, and deep-sky objects like galaxies and globular clusters—all in a compact, portable form factor.
Celestron describes SkyAlign as making setup “simple, fast, and accurate.” That is the manufacturer’s promotional claim, rather than an independent measurement. The built-in wedge is listed as supporting long exposures, but that alone is not evidence that the 4SE is a strong deep-sky imaging platform.
Portability, power, and practical ownership
Carrying the telescope
The tube is compact in design, but Celestron lists the full kit at 23 lb. Space.com’s reviewer described transport as cumbersome and reported a weight of around 8 kg; that is the reviewer’s practical observation, not a standardized carry test. For trips on foot, consider the complete setup—including tripod and accessories—rather than judging portability from the optical tube alone.

- SMARTPHONE-POWERED SKY TOUR: No experience needed! Just dock your phone, launch the StarSense Explorer app, and follow the on-screen arrows to locate stars, planets, nebulae, and more.
- PATENTED STARSENSE TECHNOLOGY: Unlike other astronomy apps, StarSense Explorer uses sky recognition technology to turn your phone into a celestial navigation system, analyzing star patterns overhead to pinpoint your telescope’s position.
- TONIGHT’S BEST TARGETS, INSTANTLY: The app generates a curated list of the top objects to see based on your time and location. See planets, bright nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters from the city—and even more from dark skies.
- SIMPLE SETUP, SMOOTH TRACKING: Features a manual altazimuth mount with altitude slow motion adjustment with a sliding rod. Follow the on-screen arrows to your target; when the bullseye turns green, you can view it clearly through the eyepiece.
- 114MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 4.5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
Power requirements
The telescope needs eight AA batteries, which Celestron does not include, or a 12 V DC, 750 mA power source with a tip-positive connector. Before choosing an external supply, verify the voltage, current, polarity, and exact connector against the telescope; do not assume that a general-purpose adapter will fit or be electrically suitable. The independent Space.com review also notes battery replacement as an ownership consideration.

The kit includes one 25 mm eyepiece. Other 1.25-inch eyepieces may be worth considering if they serve a specific purpose, such as changing magnification, but no single additional focal length is an evidence-based best choice for every owner. Check fit and intended use before buying. The reviewed product listing does not establish that a carrying case is included or verify compatibility of a particular case.

Who should consider the NexStar 4SE?
A good fit
- You want computerized locating and tracking rather than finding every target manually.
- Your priority is the Moon, planets, double stars, or brighter compact targets.
- You value a compact optical-tube design and are comfortable aligning and powering a computerized mount.
Compare other telescope types if
- You want wide-field views, expansive star clusters, or more generous framing of large objects.
- You expect detailed views of a broad range of faint galaxies and nebulae from a small aperture.
- You need a setup that is easy to carry over a significant distance.
When comparing telescopes, look at aperture and target brightness/detail, true field of view and focal length, manual versus computerized locating and tracking, total assembled weight, alignment demands, included accessories, and power requirements. The specifications here do not establish a complete ranking against other models.
