The Celestron NexStar 130SLT is a 130mm computerized Newtonian that makes finding targets easier once its GoTo mount is aligned. It is best suited to visual observing, especially wide-field views, rather than deep-sky astrophotography. Its main trade-offs are a vibration-prone tripod, alignment demands, and the extra cost or planning needed to power it.

What the NexStar 130SLT offers

Celestron’s UK listing identifies model 31145 as a 130mm Newtonian reflector with a 650mm focal length and f/5 focal ratio. That relatively short focal length favors wide-field visual observing. The mount is a computerized alt-azimuth single-fork design, controlled by a NexStar+ hand control with SkyAlign. Celestron lists a database of over 40,000 objects; that is the size of the database, not a promise that every entry will look bright or detailed through this telescope. Celestron’s product page is a UK regional listing, so check the local listing for current configuration and price.

The listed package includes 25mm and 9mm eyepieces, rated by Celestron at 26x and 72x, a StarPointer red-dot finder, hand control, tripod and mount, accessory tray, and software. Box contents can vary by market or package, so confirm them with the seller before buying. Celestron describes the scope for observing the Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter’s moons, Saturn’s rings, and terrestrial subjects. What you can make out depends on sky darkness, atmospheric steadiness, collimation, and observing conditions.

How well does it perform for visual observing?

Wide-field views and bright targets

The f/5 optical design and 650mm focal length are a good fit for broad views of star fields and larger targets. An independent hands-on review describes its rich-field performance favorably and says the optics can perform well. The reviewer also cautions that collimation matters and that inexpensive eyepieces may soften views toward the edge of the field. Those are qualitative observations, not controlled laboratory measurements. TelescopicWatch’s review gives the telescope an overall score of 3.3/5; that is the reviewer’s rating, not a population survey or scientific performance statistic.

What to expect from the computerized mount

After a successful alignment, the mount can point to and track selected objects, which can be useful if you do not want to learn the sky by manual star-hopping. The convenience depends on careful setup: errors in the entered time, date, or location, poor centering, or an unsuitable setup can undermine alignment. The same hands-on reviewer criticizes the tripod and mount for shaking and being sensitive to vibration, particularly with the legs extended, and reports that GoTo operation can be frustrating. These are that reviewer’s practical judgments, not a guarantee that every unit or observing session will behave identically.

How to align the NexStar 130SLT

Celestron’s SkyAlign procedure asks you to enter the date, time, and location, then center three bright celestial objects. The manufacturer says you do not need to know their names. Its product page and older alignment instructions describe the approach. Accurate inputs and careful centering are important; do not assume the mount will compensate for a wrong location or imprecise pointing.

Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ Smartphone Guided Newtonian Telescope
  • SMARTPHONE-POWERED SKY TOUR: No experience needed! Just dock your phone, launch the StarSense Explorer app, and follow the on-screen arrows to locate stars, planets, nebulae, and more.
  • PATENTED STARSENSE TECHNOLOGY: Unlike other astronomy apps, StarSense Explorer uses sky recognition technology to turn your phone into a celestial navigation system, analyzing star patterns overhead to pinpoint your telescope’s position.
  • TONIGHT’S BEST TARGETS, INSTANTLY: The app generates a curated list of the top objects to see based on your time and location. See planets, bright nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters from the city—and even more from dark skies.
  • SIMPLE SETUP, SMOOTH TRACKING: Features a manual altazimuth mount with dual-axis slow-motion controls. Follow the on-screen arrows to your target; when the bullseye turns green, you can view it clearly through the eyepiece.
  • 130MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
  1. Set up the tripod: Place it on firm ground and level it as carefully as practical. A stable surface and retracted legs, where your viewing position allows, can help reduce vibration.
  2. Power the mount and enter site information: Follow the hand-control prompts for date, time, and observing location. Check time zone and daylight-saving settings if prompted; incorrect time data can produce poor pointing.
  3. Choose three bright, well-separated objects: Follow SkyAlign’s instructions and center each object carefully in the eyepiece, using the finder to bring it into view. Celestron says their identities need not be known.
  4. Confirm alignment and test a target: Select a bright, recognizable target first. If the mount points noticeably off target, recheck the entered site information and centering before relying on it for a longer session.

Celestron describes assembly as requiring no tools, but that does not mean alignment is automatic or that every setup takes the same amount of time.

Power, accessories, and maintenance

Power choices

Celestron lists eight AA batteries, which are not included, a separately sold PowerTank portable battery, or a separately sold 12V AC adapter. Power is therefore part of the ownership cost and observing plan: decide how you will supply power before taking the telescope away from an outlet. The same product page lists compatibility with accessories such as StarSense AutoAlign, the SkyPortal WiFi module, and PowerTank Lithium. Confirm the exact model and electrical or mechanical compatibility before purchasing an accessory.

Collimation and care

A Newtonian reflector may need its optical alignment checked, but that does not mean a new 130SLT must be adjusted immediately. The 102SLT/130SLT manual explains how to check and adjust collimation and refers to a Newtonian collimation tool. Learn how to check alignment and use a tool only if inspection or the view indicates it is needed; the independent reviewer also emphasizes collimation’s importance for an f/5 Newtonian.

Is it suitable for astrophotography?

The 130SLT is primarily a visual telescope, not a deep-sky imaging platform. Its alt-azimuth mount tracks by moving in altitude and azimuth, and TelescopicWatch says that tracking is not accurate enough for serious deep-sky astrophotography. The reviewer considers planetary imaging possible with additional equipment, but cumbersome. If imaging is the priority, the mount and tracking arrangement deserve at least as much scrutiny as the telescope’s aperture.

Who should consider the NexStar 130SLT?

  • Consider it if you want a compact, computerized telescope for visual observing, value automatic pointing after alignment, and are willing to manage power and a setup that may require patience.
  • Think twice if you are especially sensitive to tripod shake, want the simplest possible manual setup, or expect dependable deep-sky photographs without changing the mount system.
  • Compare alternatives if your priorities are different: the independent review points to the Sky-Watcher Virtuoso GTi 150P as a GoTo option with more aperture, the Celestron Astro-Fi 130 as a similar-size option with Wi-Fi/app control and a sturdier tripod, and Dobsonian telescopes where aperture and value may matter more than a tripod-mounted GoTo arrangement.
