International Women in Engineering Day is observed every year on 23 June. Organised by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), it celebrates women engineers, raises the visibility of their work and encourages girls and women to explore engineering. The 2026 theme is “Engineering Intelligence.”
When is International Women in Engineering Day?
International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) takes place on 23 June each year. WES organises the campaign, which focuses on engineering achievements and opportunities for future generations. See the official INWED website for current campaign information.
What is the 2026 theme?
“Engineering Intelligence”
WES’s 2026 theme, “Engineering Intelligence,” highlights the expertise, judgement and leadership women contribute across engineering sectors. Campaign materials connect the theme with technical understanding, creativity, problem-solving, cultural leadership and developing the next generation of engineers.
One way to understand the theme is that engineering intelligence is both technical and human: it involves designing systems, understanding the people and communities that use them, working across disciplines and making responsible decisions. That is an interpretation of the theme, not a quotation from WES.

How did International Women in Engineering Day start?
INWED began in the UK as National Women in Engineering Day. Its milestones show how a national observance grew into an international campaign:
- 2014: WES President Dawn Bonfield MBE founded National Women in Engineering Day during the society’s 95th anniversary year.
- 2016: The observance received UNESCO patronage.
- 2017: After growing global participation, the campaign became International Women in Engineering Day.
- 2026: The campaign marks its 13th year under the theme “Engineering Intelligence.”
WES reports that the 2025 campaign generated more than 1.6 billion impressions across all platforms. Impressions measure campaign exposure; they are not a count of individual people or participants.
Why does the day matter?
Women remain under-represented in engineering and STEM. WES reports that women made up 16.5% of UK engineers in 2021; its impact page reports 16.9% in 2025. These are figures for different years, and they should not be treated as a directly comparable trend without checking the underlying measurement methods.

The gap is part of a wider global picture: the United Nations, citing UNESCO, says women make up less than one third of the world’s researchers. INWED responds by making women engineers and their work more visible and by encouraging future generations to consider engineering careers.
