On May 8, 2023, the Continuous Delivery Foundation (CDF) announced the fourth edition of its State of Continuous Delivery report and welcomed F5 NGINX, Prodvana, Salesforce, and Testkube as new members. The report highlighted widespread developer participation in DevOps-related work and associations between CI/CD tool use and software delivery performance; it did not establish that the tools caused better outcomes.

What the CDF announced

The announcement coincided with the opening of cdCon + GitOpsCon, an in-person event held May 8–9, 2023, in Vancouver, Canada. The event was co-organized by the CDF and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). The CDF said its report series began in 2021, making this the fourth report.

The CDF said the report drew on the previous six Developer Nation surveys. Those surveys reached more than 125,000 respondents worldwide over two and a half years. That figure describes the reach of the surveys cited; it should not be read as the number of people whose responses were analyzed for this report.

What the 2023 report highlighted

Developer involvement in DevOps and security testing

According to the CDF’s 2023 report, 84% of developers participated in DevOps-related activities, while 37% were actively involved in testing applications for security measures. These figures describe the report’s findings as presented by the foundation; the announcement does not provide further breakdowns or detailed survey methodology.

CI/CD tools and delivery performance

The CDF reported a correlation between CI/CD tool use and better software delivery performance across all the metrics it discussed. Correlation does not demonstrate that tool use caused the performance differences: the announcement does not establish causation or provide enough detail to evaluate the underlying analyses independently.

The report also said that increasing use of self-hosted CI/CD tools did not lead to greater performance. It suggested interoperability problems as one possible explanation, not as a proven cause. The announcement does not provide detailed measurements that would support ranking self-hosted and other approaches or comparing vendors.

Four organizations joined the CDF

The announcement named F5 NGINX, Prodvana, Salesforce, and Testkube as new members. The descriptions below reflect how the announcement presented their products and roles in 2023, not a claim about their current offerings or membership status.

F5 NGINX

The CDF described F5 NGINX as offering cloud-native, Kubernetes-friendly products for applications and APIs. Damian Curry, then Technical Director, NGINX Community and Alliances at F5, said the company saw an opportunity to support the CDF’s mission as GitOps workflows made continuous delivery increasingly important and NGINX remained prevalent across environments.

Prodvana

The announcement described Prodvana as an intelligent software delivery system for cloud-native software, built around declarative configuration and convergence. Co-founder and CEO Andrew Fong pointed to tenancy requirements as one of the delivery challenges the company focused on, and said Prodvana was joining the CDF to contribute to software delivery innovation.

Salesforce

The announcement identified Salesforce as a new member and described it as a cloud software company. It did not include a Salesforce quote in the membership announcement.

Testkube

The CDF characterized Testkube as a Kubernetes-native framework for automating existing testing tools inside a cluster. Ole Lensmar, CTO at Kubeshop, said continuous deployment pipelines were becoming central to cloud-native application delivery. He also highlighted interoperability based on CDEvents and said Testkube’s participation could help evolve the specification and its implementations.

How to interpret the announcement today

This is a historical account of a May 2023 announcement, not a description of the latest report or current CDF membership. The CDF’s announcements index later included a fifth State of CI/CD report in 2024, among other updates. The fourth report’s findings and the companies’ descriptions here should therefore be understood in their 2023 context. The announcement establishes what the CDF reported, but does not independently validate the survey analysis or supply the full methodology.
