CDs can deteriorate, but there is no universal countdown—and the headline is a risk warning, not proof that every collection is already failing. Pressed music CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs use different data layers, so their vulnerabilities differ. Aging, storage, handling, and playback equipment all affect whether a disc remains usable. The practical response is to store discs carefully and keep verified backups of anything you cannot replace.

How long do CDs last?

There is no defensible single lifespan for an individual CD. A disc’s construction, manufacturing variation, storage conditions, handling, and playback equipment all matter. A published longevity estimate applies to the tested media and conditions—not automatically to every disc in a home collection.

The Library of Congress notes that commercial-disc material composition is proprietary and may vary by brand. Its FAQ repeats an estimate that some gold-colored optical discs may last more than 100 years under sound storage conditions; that narrow estimate is not a guarantee for all gold-colored discs, much less a prediction for pressed music CDs. The Library of Congress also says it does not recommend commercial products or suppliers.

NIST’s longevity report dates to 2005, and its samples were acquired that year. Its testing can inform preservation decisions, but it cannot establish how long a specific disc made then—or one made today—will remain readable. NIST and Library of Congress CD and DVD longevity study

What is CD rot?

“CD rot” is a loose label for deterioration, not one single failure mechanism. For pressed CD-ROM and CD-audio discs, the Library of Congress identifies oxidation, hydrolysis, and mechanical stress as possible causes of signal errors. It summarizes the risk this way: “Aging, storage environment, and handling can cause changes in the materials leading to deterioration and loss of data, sometimes referred to as ‘CD-Rot’ or ‘Laser-Rot’.”

A pressed disc has molded data in a polycarbonate substrate, a reflective metal layer, and a protective top coating. Damage or chemical changes in these layers can interfere with the signal a player reads. Errors may accumulate even when a casual visual inspection does not reveal a clear problem.

For CD-ROM, the Library of Congress cites a block error rate above 220 errors per second—the maximum specified by ISO 10149—as a point at which uncorrectable errors may develop and information may be lost. That is a technical measurement, not a household remaining-life calculator or a visual pass/fail test. Library of Congress: CD-ROM longevity

Pressed CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs do not age the same way

Format How its data layer works What the evidence supports
Pressed CD audio or CD-ROM Data is molded into a polycarbonate substrate, beneath a reflective metal layer and protective coating. Oxidation, hydrolysis, and mechanical stress can cause signal errors. The Library of Congress says commercial material composition varies and is proprietary.
CD-R A recording laser changes a photosensitive organic dye layer; the format is write-once. The Library of Congress says recordable media tend to degrade faster than ROM media. NIST accelerated-aging tests found stability differences among tested manufacturers.
CD-RW A phase-changing metal-alloy film between dielectric layers stores data; the format is rewritable. Its construction differs from both pressed discs and CD-R. Do not treat test results for other formats as a specific lifespan prediction for every CD-RW.

Recordable-disc durability depends on more than the dye or alloy: the reflective layer and manufacturing also matter. NIST’s 2004 work used accelerated aging at elevated temperature and humidity and examined direct-light exposure. Those results describe tested samples under laboratory conditions; they do not prove that all retail music CDs or all blank discs currently sold will fail at a particular rate. Why does my CD skip?

Skipping is a sign of a playback problem, but it does not by itself prove chemical deterioration. Surface contamination or physical damage can interfere with reading, while aging-related signal errors may also affect playback. The player itself is another part of the access chain: a disc that remains intact is not useful if compatible hardware is unavailable or unreliable.

There is no simple visual check that reliably diagnoses a disc’s remaining life. For important digital content, the Library of Congress recommends checking readability on two different machines and keeping a backup. A successful read today is useful evidence of current access, not a guarantee of future playback. Library of Congress: Optical media

How do I store CDs so they last?

  1. Keep discs cool and dry. NIST explains that oxygen and pollutants can migrate through disc layers with moisture, and that higher humidity combined with higher temperatures accelerates oxidation. Cool, dry storage reduces avoidable exposure; it cannot stop all aging or reverse existing damage. NIST: Care and handling of CDs and DVDs
  2. Use a secure case. The Library of Congress considers jewel cases acceptable enclosures. If replacing one, choose a case that holds the disc at its center hub so it is not loose inside.
  3. Handle discs carefully. Avoid unnecessary handling and mechanical stress. Keep dust off; the Library of Congress recommends canned air for removing dust from optical discs. Library of Congress: Care, handling, and storage
  4. Back up valuable content. Copy or rip important material while it is readable, then verify that the resulting files open and play. Keep the backup separate from the original disc.
  5. Test access on more than one machine. A second drive can help distinguish a disc problem from a problem with one player, and it checks whether the content remains accessible through different equipment.

Can a damaged CD be recovered?

Sometimes. The Library of Congress says content from a faulty optical disc may be recoverable by ripping it to a computer and then writing files to a new disc. Success is not guaranteed, particularly if errors have already made data unreadable. For preservation transfer, it advises choosing a provider that specializes in the specific original format. A recovered copy should be checked, and it does not repair the original disc.
