Caterpillar announced plans on September 30, 2026, to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina, including a new manufacturing facility in Sanford. The company says the facility will expand production of compact track loaders and telehandlers. The investment is planned, not a completed expenditure, and Caterpillar has not announced a firm job count or construction and opening dates.
What is Caterpillar building in Sanford?
Caterpillar plans to build a new, modern manufacturing facility in Sanford for its Cat Compact business. It is intended to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers as demand for compact equipment grows. Caterpillar says the planned facility will use advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics; these are features described in the company’s plan, not completed or independently verified operations. Caterpillar’s September 30 announcement does not name specific models.
How much is Caterpillar investing?
The approximately $1 billion is Caterpillar’s intended investment in North Carolina, which includes the Sanford facility. The company has not characterized that amount as money already spent, nor does the announcement break out how much is allocated specifically to Sanford. Caterpillar said it chose North Carolina because of its longstanding presence in the state, the strength of the local workforce, and the opportunity to build on manufacturing expertise and existing Sanford operations. Construction Industries Group President Rod Shurman thanked the state, Lee County and the City of Sanford for their partnership and support.

North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley welcomed the plans in a statement issued September 30. He praised the state’s manufacturing base and highlighted apprenticeship opportunities as a way to prepare workers for the future. Lilley’s statement is a state official’s response; the available announcement and statement do not establish public comments from Sanford or Lee County officials matching the headline’s description of local leaders. How many jobs will the expansion create?
Caterpillar has not disclosed a firm number of new jobs tied to the Sanford facility, or a hiring schedule, wages or other employment terms. Lilley referred to Caterpillar as a major Lee County employer and praised apprenticeship pathways, but his statement does not give an apprenticeship count or a hiring commitment for the new facility. The company’s release also gives no construction start, completion date or building size.
What incentives were reported?
WRAL reported that local officials had approved incentives intended to retain Caterpillar and 2,000 existing jobs in Lee County. Its September 30 headline put the local tax breaks at $85 million. Those retained jobs are not a promised count of new positions at the planned facility, and the incentive figure is distinct from Caterpillar’s intended $1 billion investment. WRAL also cited a Commerce Department spokesperson for $2.6 million from the Industrial Development Fund’s Utility Account and $500,000 from the state Department of Transportation’s Rail Division. These are reported public-support figures; the cited report alone does not establish the complete approval terms, conditions, payout timing or final amounts.
