In 2007, Mazda announced a catalytic-converter design intended to use 70–90% less precious metal by fixing particles smaller than five nanometres in ceramic material. That figure was Mazda’s claim as reported at the time—not a confirmed current specification or proof that the design reached production.
What makes a catalytic converter “nano”?
Automotive catalytic converters use platinum, rhodium and palladium to promote reactions involving pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. These metals are costly, so a design that preserves catalytic activity while using less of them could reduce material costs.
Mazda’s 2007 announcement described precious-metal particles under five nanometres across, fixed in ceramic spheres. The idea was to keep the particles from moving together when exposed to exhaust heat, retaining more of their active surface. The report did not explain Mazda’s method for fixing them in place.
Why do catalyst nanoparticles agglomerate?
According to the 2007 report, exhaust heat can cause small metal particles to migrate and join together, or agglomerate. When particles clump, less metal surface is exposed to exhaust gases, which can reduce catalyst efficiency. Immobilizing particles was intended to limit that movement and preserve useful surface area.

What did Mazda and Nissan claim?

The percentages are claims reported in the same 2007 news article, not directly comparable independently measured results. Ned Stafford’s Chemistry World report records both announcements and plans; it does not establish later production or adoption.
Did Mazda’s nano-catalyst enter production?
The available report does not establish whether Mazda’s design was commercialized, which vehicle—if any—first used it, or whether a compatible product is available now. It therefore cannot support a claim that a current car contains this specific nano-catalyst or that a replacement part sold today uses Mazda’s reported approach.

What the 2007 announcement does—and does not—show
The potential benefit described was lower use of valuable platinum-group metals. The report also mentioned possible health implications from emitted platinum-group metals, but it did not show that Mazda’s proposed design improved health outcomes. Fraunhofer IKTS deputy director Michael Zins said at the time, “I am sure all other companies are working on the technology.” That was his expectation in 2007, not evidence of subsequent adoption by automakers.
