If you mean Castlevania: Symphony of the Night versus Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, choose Symphony of the Night for the specific classic Castlevania entry documented here; choose Bloodstained for Koji Igarashi’s later exploration-focused side-scrolling action RPG. They share creative lineage, but Bloodstained is not an official Castlevania game, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner.
Which games are being compared?
“Castlevania” names a long-running series, not one game. This comparison uses Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as the Castlevania counterpart to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a distinction that matters when deciding what to play or buy.
Konami lists Symphony of the Night as released on October 2, 1997, for PlayStation and Sega Saturn. Its official history page describes Alucard, magical transformations, hidden weapons and secrets, and more than 140 enemies, bosses, and creatures. That enemy count is Konami’s publisher description, not an independently audited total. Konami’s Symphony of the Night history page
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a later game developed by ArtPlay and published by 505 Games. Steam lists its release date as June 18, 2019, and describes it as an exploration-focused side-scrolling action RPG by Koji Igarashi. Bloodstained’s Steam listing

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
How do their premises and features differ?
Symphony of the Night
Konami’s description centers on Alucard and his exploration of a castle, highlighting magical transformations, hidden weapons, secrets, and a bestiary of more than 140 enemies, bosses, and creatures. Those details establish the game’s premise and listed features; they do not, by themselves, settle subjective questions such as pacing or difficulty.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Steam’s listing describes Miriam fighting through a demon-infested castle to stop a curse that is crystallizing her body. It also lists weapons, spells, voice-acted scenes, and 2.5D graphics. These are storefront descriptions, not independent judgments of quality.
Rank #2
- Over 140 different enemies, bosses and ghastly creatures.
- Awesome magical spells - transform into a bat, a wolf, or ethereal mist.
- Hidden weapons, secrets and characters... the largest Castlevania ever!
The practical distinction is that Symphony of the Night is the classic Castlevania title in this comparison, while Bloodstained is a later Igarashi-led action RPG with its own setting and protagonist. Neither description supports a claim that one is categorically better.

Koji Igarashi discussed Bloodstained in relation to Symphony of the Night in a 2017 interview with Game Developer. Asked about the action, he said: “Overall we try to keep that nostalgic gameplay while improving the parts we can fix in Bloodstained.” Game Developer’s August 21, 2017 interview with Igarashi

- Easy to frame (comes with 2 hanging hooks) and makes a great gift too
In that same interview, Igarashi said Bloodstained began on Kickstarter to answer fans’ wish for another “Igavania” game, more than to realize a project he personally wanted to create. The term is the interviewer’s framing for Igarashi’s Castlevania design lineage, not an official genre label. Steam’s “Metroidvania” tag is user-defined.
Which one should you play first?
Choose Symphony of the Night if…
- You want the specific classic Castlevania entry in this comparison.
- You are interested in Alucard, magical transformations, hidden weapons, and secrets as described by Konami.
- You want to experience the game Igarashi referenced when discussing the action and nostalgic gameplay behind Bloodstained.
Choose Bloodstained if…
- You want Igarashi’s later exploration-focused side-scrolling action RPG.
- Miriam’s curse-and-castle premise, along with listed weapons, spells, voice-acted scenes, and 2.5D presentation, is the more appealing starting point.
- You prefer a game released in 2019 over the 1997 classic.
There is no verified like-for-like critic score, completion-time figure, or other numerical measure here that settles the choice. Difficulty, atmosphere, pacing, and overall quality are subjective questions the cited descriptions and interview do not resolve.
