Cassie can walk and run on two legs, but the evidence does not show that Cassie herself is replacing workers. Agility Robotics developed her as a research platform for studying bipedal locomotion. Her work helped inform Digit, the company’s commercial robot, so the job question is really about where humanoid automation may go—not a report that Cassie is already taking jobs.

What is Cassie?

Cassie is a bipedal research-and-development robot created by Agility Robotics. The company says its early bipedal robots, including Cassie and ATRIAS, informed its commercially available Digit platform. Agility places Cassie’s first steps in 2016, and the robot was sold to research groups rather than positioned as a consumer product. Agility Robotics’ company history describes that development path.

For researchers, Cassie provides a physical platform for investigating how a two-legged robot can move, balance, and respond to changing conditions. A University of Michigan robotics lab, for example, describes its Cassie Blue as having five motors on each leg and uses it for walking, standing, and turning experiments. The lab’s Cassie Blue page gives those details.

Can Cassie really walk like a human?

Cassie walks on two legs and can run, which makes her movement recognizably human-like. That does not mean her motion, perception, or decision-making is equivalent to a person’s. Her value is as a platform for studying legged movement, not as evidence of human-level judgment or general intelligence.

Agility traces its bipedal work to biomechanics and simulation. IEEE Spectrum has also described Cassie as a platform for studying human-like gait dynamics. IEEE Spectrum’s coverage helps explain why researchers use her to explore walking behavior.

How fast can Cassie walk?

IEEE Spectrum reported in 2018 that an initial controller developed by Agility Robotics achieved a walking speed of 5 km/h. That figure describes a reported result for an early controller, not a guaranteed operating speed across terrain, tasks, or current robot configurations. The report also places the achievement in the context of research on dynamic bipedal movement.

What can Cassie do beyond walking on flat ground?

Walk and run dynamically

Research on Cassie has demonstrated dynamic walking and running. Researchers have also reported deploying learned controllers on a human-sized, torque-controlled biped in the real world, with locomotion skills generalized across varied tasks. The research paper describes that work. These results show progress in locomotion control; they do not establish that Cassie can independently perform a broad range of workplace jobs.

Navigate stairs and uneven surfaces

IEEE Spectrum has reported stair experiments in which Cassie used proprioceptive information—information about the robot’s own movement and body state—to handle uneven outdoor stairs. Stairs matter because they expose the difficulty of keeping balance when footholds and surfaces vary. IEEE Spectrum’s stair coverage illustrates both the potential of legged mobility and the engineering challenge it presents.

Why build a robot with two legs?

Many human environments are organized around people: stairs, walkways, and floor layouts that change from one area to another. A biped could, in principle, move through spaces that are awkward for wheeled machines. That is a mobility advantage, not proof that a biped can safely or economically complete every task in those spaces.

Agility Robotics co-founder and CTO Jonathan Hurst described the ambition to build low-cost, adaptable robots for human spaces as “That’s the dream.” The company’s stated mission is to “build robot partners that augment the human workforce, ultimately enabling humans to be more human.” Those statements describe an aspiration; they are not evidence that a particular robot has replaced workers or that every deployment will augment rather than displace labor. Agility’s company page provides the company’s framing.

Is Cassie the same robot as Digit?

No. Cassie is a research platform; Digit is Agility Robotics’ commercial robot line. Agility says its earlier bipedal work informed Digit, but that lineage does not make the two robots interchangeable. The company’s history identifies the connection.

When evaluating any claim about a robot’s workplace role, distinguish locomotion research from commercial deployment. Useful questions include whether the robot can manipulate objects, what tasks it is suited to, what sensing and autonomy it uses, how it handles terrain and stairs, and whether there is evidence of actual workplace deployment. A demonstration of walking alone does not answer those questions.

Could a bipedal robot take your job?

Robots that can move through human spaces could eventually be relevant to work involving movement between locations. But Cassie’s documented role is research, and her walking demonstrations do not show that she is performing jobs at scale. Agility’s commercial labor narrative concerns Digit, the successor platform informed by earlier robots—not Cassie as a deployed worker.

Whether robots affect a particular job depends on more than the ability to walk. A workplace system must be able to perform the task itself, operate reliably in its environment, and fit the organization’s safety and practical requirements. Cassie provides evidence that dynamic bipedal locomotion is possible; it does not, by itself, establish job replacement or the scale of any future labor impact.
