No—Cash App’s documented guidance does not provide a way to get someone’s phone number from their $Cashtag. You can enter a phone number or email address you already have, or choose to sync your contacts to find people. If you only have a $Cashtag, ask the person for the contact details they want to share or verify their identity through a trusted channel before paying.
Can you search Cash App by phone number?
Cash App describes two recipient-finding options: enter a phone number or email address you already know, or choose to let the app access and upload your phone contacts. The Privacy Notice says contact syncing can make it easier to find people you want to send money to. Cash App Privacy Notice

- Already have their number or email: Enter it as the recipient information when finding someone to pay.
- The person is in your phone contacts: You can choose to sync contacts with Cash App.
Neither option is a documented way to discover a stranger’s number. If you do not already have their contact information, ask them directly rather than using a third-party lookup service.

A $Cashtag is a unique username that identifies a Cash App account; it is not described as a reverse phone lookup tool. Cash App’s Terms of Service say users may select a unique alphanumeric name to identify themselves on the service. Cash App says it may make some information available to other customers so they can recognize the person they are transacting with. Its Privacy Notice gives examples including a user’s name and Cashtag, prior transaction history, join date, and whether the user appears in someone’s contacts. That passage does not establish that a phone number is never visible in every circumstance, so do not treat it as an absolute privacy guarantee.
How to confirm the right person before paying
A matching name or Cashtag alone may not be enough to confirm that a payment request is genuine. If a request is unexpected—even if it appears to come from someone you know—contact the person using a separate, trusted channel, such as a number you already have saved. - Check the recipient details shown in Cash App before confirming payment.
- For an unexpected request, call or message the person through a contact method you already trust.
- Do not rely on contact information or links included in a suspicious message.
What to do about a suspicious contact or payment
If someone sends a suspicious message
Open Cash App directly or go to its official website instead of following an unsolicited link or calling a number supplied in a message. For account-specific help, Cash App’s Terms list in-app chat and 1-800-969-1940 as support channels. Cash App says its representatives will not ask for your password, PIN, or full debit card number. - In Cash App, open the activity feed and select the payment.
- Choose the option to report an issue and follow the prompts. Cash App: Report a scam payment
- Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC recommends reporting mobile-payment scams to the app provider as well. FTC: How to avoid a scam when using mobile payment apps
Reporting a payment does not guarantee that you will get the money back; the FTC warns that money sent through mobile payment apps can be difficult to recover.
